Free Public Pool
updated: Apr 15, 2014, 8:35 PM

A reader is wondering if there is a pool in town available for lap swimming without having to purchase a gym membership, or if there is a gym that offers prorated rates for use of the pool only.

Have you tried Los Banos on Cabrillo? I think you can pay per day there.

UCSB Rec Center has great pool, punch card. Parking may be tricky.

The Carp pool is great for this.

Los Banos, UCSB Rec Center or the 2 YMCA's are your choices for lap swim. You can get 'swim only' at some Clubs in town, but it's a membership….for swim only.

You can join the Santa Barbara Swim Club and swim with the masters group at Los Banos at 6:00 a.m. or 6:00 p.m. weekdays and 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. There are seven lanes from slow to fast. This is a coached workout and everyone in a lane is doing the same workout. If you want to swim on your own, you could try the daily lap swims at Los Banos, which are after the masters workouts in the morning and evening and also at noon weekdays. Not sure what their schedule is on weekends.

Ocean is free.

Just buy a $200 wetsuit...much more exciting in the ocean regardless. Lap swimming is boring, in my opinion.

The Ocean Ducks swim off of Butterfly every Sunday. Great group of people, slow and fast.

413 - The Ocean Ducks group sounds pretty neat. What type of wetsuit do most swimmers wear e.g. 4/3, 3/2, etc?

Can you post some pics sometime of the group, where they enter the swim, etc?

Thanks in advance.

Vista del Monte has a fitness center with a pool that is open to the public. They have single day passes for a little over $7. They also have a couple of membership options. The pool isn't available Monday through Friday evenings, because it's used by a swim school.
At the Santa Barbara YMCA, the pool is crowded and noisy in the evenings due to the children's programs. Also, the pool has been closed on numerous occasions due to fecal matter in the water after swimming lessons for the younger children.
This town could use some more swimming venues for adults, especially out in Goleta.

I would love, love it if they would open a pool somewhere here not just for swimming, but where you can lay out and catch some rays, read, etc. like in a hotel. Does any one know if any local hotels offer day passes for that? 437P I am going to check out Vista Del Monte for the lap swimming though.

@453 You can do that at the Carp pool

The Goleta Valley Athletic Club has a "non prime time" membership that allows discounted use of the pool, provided you are using the facilities only during off hours. It's not what you asked for, but they're pretty flexible about working with you to find what works for you. http://www.gvac.com/membershipinfo.html

@459 except for the fog and cold wind and listening to bad aquarobics music, lol....

Careful with the Vista del Monte pool too. It is small, very warm, and they have a swimming time with babies. Fecal matter could be an issue. I decided against it for this reason.

Carp pool: How long is the pool? How's the parking? I'd love to pay a reasonable amount to go swim laps in someone's clean pool. Minimum 25 yards. Thanks.

Yes it's right next to the golf course where you can play a round for free and the free outdoor theater that serves free popcorn and cold beverages. You can't miss it. Just hang a left at the free gas station and it'll be on your right.

you'd probably want a triathlon suit for ocean swimming, a wetsuit for surfing will be too warm and flush too much water for swimming. a 3/2 would be more than adequate as you'll warm up quickly while moving constantly. suits come in varying qualities as well, i have two 4/3's for winter and one is fleece lined with fluid welding on all the seams, it's about 2x as warm and flexible as my other 4/3.

I understand the request completely. Buying a membership means that if you miss swimming for a month or more because of other commitments, a membership is a waste of money. Being able to pay as you go is far better, and a wise use of one's budget $.

The snark about wanting something for free is beyond pathetic.

@920P There's a dedicated group of misanthropic posters here. I've learned to ignore them over the years. I don't know if they're 13 year olds just trolling for fun or old, misearable drunks or what. It doesn't matter. I just ignore them. Worst part of Edhat, which altogether is a wonderful website.
