UC Verde Buffalo Grass
updated: Apr 14, 2014, 3:20 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

We are looking for some feedback on UC Verde Buffalo Grass How well does it grow here?

Any feedback on how it looks while dormant? How does it handle foot traffic - we have a dog and kid? Anywhere in town I can see it in action?

Buffalo grass would grow fine here, but not so great in heavy traffic. You would do better with paspalum, very drought resistant and does great in salt air, though not as attractive as buffalo grass that is in it's optimum environment.

There are lots of great examples of healthy buffalo grass here in Santa Barbara. If I needed lawn, that is what I would put in the ground.

A volunteer at the UCSB Master Gardener program suggested going to the Botanical Garden and looking at the different species. Funny, I have been researching Buffalo grass this week too.

What a coincidence that this came up as I was wondering about this grass too. Does anyone know if it grows on gentle slopes?

I have a lawn that's about 20 by 40 feet growing in mission Canyon planted in UC verde buffalo grass about 2 years ago. It is beautiful, uses very little water and is green the whole year. If you would like to see it please contact me.

Regarding the Buffalo Grass lawn growing in Mission Canyon, I live there too and am considering planting same. Is it possible to take a look at your lawn? David (tel 448-9840)
