Man Accused of Assaulting Officer, Competent?
updated: Apr 14, 2014, 10:30 AM

The Independent reports that Andrew Furst, the 26-year-old who was shot by police while being accused of assaulting an officer this past December, is waiting for the court to determine his competency to stand trial. Two physicians have previously evaluated Furst who has an extensive criminal history with mental illness. One physician approved his mental competency while another physician disapproved. A third physician has been appointed to evaluate Furst while the Judge is expected to make a decision in the coming weeks.

On December 6th, edhat's Roger the Scanner Guy and edhat subscribers reported potential gun shots and several police on the Westside near San Andres Street. The Santa Barbara Police Department reported that on December 6, 2013 at 11:26 p.m., several officers responded to multiple 9-1-1 calls of a subject brandishing a deadly weapon inside of a residence on the 1200 block of San Andres Street. Shortly after the responding officers arrived on-scene the suspect, later identified as Andrew Furst, allegedly assaulted one of the officers with a shard of glass. A shooting incident involving that officer occurred and Furst sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
