Knapp's Castle
updated: Apr 13, 2014, 7:39 PM

Do any you of you Audubon hikers know if you can get to Knapp's Castle? We were going to hike there today but saw something that said the current owner is building something and has it blocked off. If access is blocked can you at least get close enough to see it?

Having spent time there I know the ruins are visible from hills to the southwest, but I don't know if it is private property. If there is a sign up you should respect the current owner.

Yes, some construction and repair has taken place at the ruin, but so far it is still okay to hike there. There are no signs saying "keep out" and any caretakers we have encountered are only concerned that visitors be respectful and not leave trash.

I was there there not long ago….you can hike there, even though it is private property. As others have said, be mindful of the caretakers and respect the property and you'll be fine.

Just up there this weekend, it's open. No fence.

My bicyclist boyfriend saw an adult mountain lion up at Knapp's. The lion jumped across his path, not 20 feet in front of him. If you're thinking of taking a dog with you, I'd keep the dog leashed----just in case. And remember: DO NOT RUN if you think the lion is coming for you or your dog. A walking stick might come in handy.
Stand your ground, yell like a burly Mr. T, and whatever you do, don't bend down (to pick up a rock, say) or look smaller than you are. Look big and act dangerous.

Yes--you can get there and watch a lovely sunset. Just take your picnic debris out.

There are a few mtn lions that live up there. I have seen two different ones (male/female?) in the past two months...several times.

I like how the owners keep it open, but, its all fun and games until a "Knapps Fire" is started, similar to what happened in the Tea Gardens. The owners better have a solid insurance policy in place.

But, yes, its open and accessible. Please no smoking or camp fires.

I was just up there yesterday. You can really see how low the water level has gotten at Cachuma Lake.

Regarding fire, now that there's been a live-in caretaker up there a few years now, I wonder if he'd even let anyone start a campfire?

You can also hike up there from Paradise Rd - park by the tree with a large growth (when you see it, you will understand) and hike up...I think about 7 miles round trip (?). Snyder trail, perhaps? Also, then you need a parking pass from the forest service...Enjoy!

There's a caretaker on site, and visitors are free to hike around as long as they behave. Last time I was there we found a rope swing and I shot some great photos of my daughter apparently swinging out over the whole Santa Ynez valley. As we were leaving a group of goth-looking kids were setting up to shoot cover art for their band's dvd. It's a great special place and it will stay that way as long as people are cool about it.
