April 13, 2014 - Historic Riviera Tree

Betsy Green is back again with another installment of "Way Back When," informing the community of what was going on in Santa Barbara 100 years ago. The first story shows how sparse the Riviera was in April of 1914 with a picture of just one house and one tree. In fact, the article discusses the planting of this tree and how houses will soon be built in this area. For all you history sleuths out there, Betsy asks if anyone can identify the house and the tree. Any ideas?

It's been an interesting week on the edhat comment boards. Surprisingly a story about the fog horn on the cruise ship has garnered 77 comment so far! Who knew a fog horn would be so controversial? Our Friday Flash Photo also caused quite a stir! We had a record amount of photos being sent in. So far Ed has counted 139 photos of pets sent in and there are still more coming! Some commenters have asked for more pet photos which is why we have the Dogs and Cats of the Week! Send in your pet pics to ed@edhat.com to be nominated for instant edhat fame and a full week of dedication.

Our Dog of the Week is Twigs, a handsome rescue and therapy dog. Our Cat of the Week is Maria who is still looking for a home! Our Non-Profit of the Week is the Santa Barbara Rape Crisis Center who empower people through healing to eliminate all forms of sexual violence. Rosie cooks up some Spanish-style lentils, edhatters talk about local history, one subscriber is curious about the courthouse chimes, and the Dedicated Staff went to Brews at the Beach. Read these stories and more below.

---- Edhat Stuff ----------------------------------

The Festivals 4 a Cause held their 2nd Annual Brews at the Beach at Chase Palm Park and the Dedicated Staff was there snapping pics.

Mission & State: The Santa Barbara Unified School District balances cost and academic achievement as it offers 1,200 iPads to its students through California Common Core funding.

IN THE KITCHEN: I had some fun in the kitchen the other night and made Spanish-style lentils with chorizo and spinach.

Way Back When: April 1914 — Buffalo Bill came to town with the circus. And Pancho Villa and the Mexican revolution came to a theater near you.

NON-PROFIT OF THE WEEK: Santa Barbara Rape Crisis Center empowers people through healing and social change to eliminate all forms of sexual violence.

DOG OF THE WEEK: Meet Twigs, an older rescue dog who is still a puppy at heart.

CAT OF THE WEEK: Meet Maria, a playful and talkative kitty still looking for a great home!
