March 6, 2014 - Ellwood's History

Tom Modugno shares the history of Ellwood Beach, Ellwood School, and anything else with the Ellwood name. Apparently a man named Ellwood Cooper owned a lot of land in what now is known as Goleta, and built himself up as a historical icon for locals to remember. Click here to read more about Ellwood's history.

The Dedicated Staff of edhat.com has had quite a busy week. First they tallied the final numbers of the March Edness contest, declaring Penelope805 as our winner who correctly guessed every photo location. Then they played quite the practical joke on subscribers by announcing a new website titled "Mutt Mates, Santa Barbara's first dog dating website." Ed was delightfully surprised by the positive feedback we received from Mutt Mates that he's actually considering a new possible web site. So if your dog really is lonely and would like a companion (friendly or romantic) let us know!

Our Dog of the Week is Dodger, a resilient pup fighting lymphoma. Our Cat of the Week is Angel, a black kitty looking for her forever home. Our Non- Profit of the Week is Hillside House who provides a safe home-like environment for people with differing levels of disability. Fred is fired up over the recent kerfuffle at UCSB involving a professor and pro-life activist, Lauren reviews the sandwiches at The Shop on Milpas, Rosie views "The Grand Budapest Hotel" by Wes Anderson, and Tom gives us a history lesson on Ellwood.

---- Edhat Stuff ----------------------------------

Mission & State: The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department has spent $12,000 to build 11 temporary holdings cells in the county jail's transportation corridor.

We've all called it that, but who is Ellwood?

Film: Wes Anderson's newest flick, The Grand Budapest Hotel, is delightfully imaginative and quirky.

Lauren: The Shop has been serving up breakfast and lunch for over a year on Milpas, but how did it compare on the Ed rating scale?

Fired Up!: Fred has a lot to say about the UCSB professor who allegedly assaulted pro-life protestors. Do you agree with Fred?

NON-PROFIT OF THE WEEK: Hillside House is a residential facility for people with developmental disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, autism and epilepsy.

CAT OF THE WEEK: Meet Angel, a beautiful and friendly black cat looking to be adopted!

DOG OF THE WEEK: Meet Dodger, an 11 year old love bug fighting lymphoma.
