I just saw a photo of the guy being arrested, sheriff car parked sideways in the street, and the somewhat young white male being cuffed with swat guys around him. The photo was taken out of the neighbor's window. Im sure this all got their attention in that quiet neighborhood

Why are people making arrests so much more difficult? I don't remember so much resistance in the past. Law enforcement typically has much more power they can bring to bear than any ordinary citizen can so why the delusion that one can fight it out and win?

Video game induced delusions, perhaps? Movies showing cops to be poor shots and crashing into each other in car chases is the reality these folks expect? Whatever it is ... it's brain damage.

Travis Rosenblatt is a real piece of work. Back in 2010, when arrested in Santa Barbara for DUI, he tried to kick the arresting officer in the head. Resisting arrest was added to the DUI charge at that time.

All that when a traffic stop would have done the job....

But I guess it was more fun to put on the army gear, load up the automatic weapons, get in the bearcat, blockade a residential neighborhood, surround the house, get on the PA system at 5am, start blowing concussion grenades, tell all the residents to shelter in place, toss in a remote controlled robot, get the police dog ready and finally send in the seal team to capture the suspect.

I was sure he'd turn out to be an international terrorist, who'd sworn to "never be taken alive"

I'm sure it was good practice and after all, what could possibly go wrong with all those loaded machine guns.

Yes why doesnt the PD just send these nice guys a letter telling them to please report to the police station. ps leave any weapons at home and we will trust that you do. Sure would save all of this police action. I am sure the receiver of the letter would surely comply and they could all have a group hug. If the letter doesnt work I see there are many who post here that think they could talk to these people and bring them in with an ice cream cone or something.

Sheriff's office completely mishandled this arrest. They went into a peaceful neighborhood and created a fake war zone for hours. I hope the citizen review board takes notice and puts the SBSO on check.

What happened to the old fashion bust the door down and get 'em while they sleep?

More evidence of the militarization of our local police forces. We have crossed the line. Shelter in place is unconstitutional. They have no right to force you to remain in your home. None.

These keystone cops think they're warriors yet actual soldiers do not act anywhere near as combative. Talk to any Marine and ask them how they deal with actual enemies in actual combat. You'd be shocked to know that they are far more kind than our police and far more in control of their emotions, their weapons and the target.

We have spent 35 billion since 2001 arming our local police force with more weaponry than most small countries... Who are they arming against exactly? Why do they need a SWAT team to arrest an unarmed guy who has lived at the same house for years?

264 - The people have had to give up their guns, so why not? I have been in many life threatening events and am put in harms way every day. We, however, are not allowed to carry a concealed weapon in Santa Barbara or even open carry a rifle anymore. Yes, I would like to have the tools to have a better chance of coming home every night. If I am allowed to have these tools, then I am OK with police having them too.

I don't know what giving up guns has to do with this story. Any request for the citizens to disarm would only decrease the number of weapons in the hands of those that can assist law enforcement. The evil doers that use weapons for ilk won't voluntarily turn in or give up their weapons.
I like the Swiss approach, armed and peaceful citizenry.

The mere fact that the SBSO has a Bearcat and SWAT team (or whatever silly acronym the Sheriff chooses to call his little wannabe army) increases the pressure to use the fancy weapons and unnecessarily harm or kill someone.

I predict that in the very near future innocent people are going to be killed by the very people who are supposed to protect them, and all we're going to get from the Sheriff is a bunch of pathetic excuses.

COMMENT 508329 agree helpful negative off topic

    2014-04-03 02:41 PM

286 - I'm not a criminal, psycho or lying. There have been ZERO concealed weapons permits issued in SB county in the past two years. It is also illegal to open or closed carry any weapon (long rifle or handgun) in California. Therefore, there is no way to keep a gun for protection in public. But you are correct, they have not taken away our guns yet (its coming soon, look at Connecticut). We have lost all freedom in this country, some of us are not going to go down quietly.

COMMENT 508335P agree helpful negative off topic

    2014-04-03 03:00 PM

Of course no concealed weapons permits are issued anymore - although the Sheriff pretends to support the constitution, he doesn't believe US citizens have the right to defend themselves or their property - that's HIS job.

So if someone breaks into your home and is murdering your family, the Sheriff expects you to dial 9-1-1 and wait the 45 minutes or hour it takes for his boys to dress up in their army costumes and crank up the old Bearcat. By the time the cavalry gets there to "save" you, about the best you can hope for is that they'll put you out of your misery.

As for actually using a licensed concealed weapon to defend yourself in public, it would have to be the absolute last resort... kinda like the way it SHOULD be with police officers who now casually blow away anyone who they feel the least bit "threatened" by.

COMMENT 508360 agree helpful negative off topic

    2014-04-03 03:37 PM

I repeat, nobody has had their "guns taken away". That is an NRA lie, and repeating it will not make it true.

If you don't like our gun laws, you're welcome to move to a state that gives criminals and psychos the unlimited ability to arm themselves. Thankfully, we're more civilized here.

And yes, in a perfect world, people would only use their permitted concealed weapons only as the "last resort", but as we've seen again and again, too many concealed carry people choose to use them as their first resort.

COMMENT 508367P agree helpful negative off topic

    2014-04-03 03:48 PM

Actually, NO, we have not seen "too many concealed carry people" abuse the right to defend their selves - although widespread mayhem was predicted in states that became 'shall issue', with the exception of the Zimmerman/martin case there hasn't been much abuse at all. Nice try at propaganda though.

    2014-04-03 03:57 PM

360- Didn't you read my comment that you were right and they have not taken our guns away yet. Just restricted what kinds we can own and not be allowed to carry outside of the house. That is taking away rights and might as well be a complete ban on guns. I have lived in many different states and countries and most have CCW and have never had a problem. I even have been to one county that there is an order that every home owner must have a gun. They have had one homicide in 10 years (none gun related). Most of those areas are much safer than here or other areas where guns are banned. And a lot more civil too. Trust me you will never hear a person there say something like "if you don't like it you can just move" If you were as civil as you say then you would just say "to each there own".

Actually, "the concealed carry guy" involved in the theatre shooting didn't need a permit - he's a retired cop, and as such doesn't need a permit. What he does need (like most every cop nowadays) is to be relieved of the idea that he can get away with shooting anyone who's the slightest threat to his personal safety.

And no, I didn't write off anyone's life, you're putting words in my mouth - I said widespread mayhem was predicted in states that became 'shall issue' for CCW, and there has been no such thing.

Dream on folks who think a better method may prevail in the future. You may really like the guy who smiles and hauls the dumpster out on the right days.

Knock on his door to see what you get..wanna share tomato seedlings, gardening items, etc.? Most drugs suck and your pals and kids may know more than you do, so do most armed bank robbers.

    2014-04-03 07:26 PM

Dream on? Actually there was a better way in the past - back when police officers were peace officers and didn't view everything through the war-on-drugs lens, there wasn't any need for SWAT teams and armored cars... certainly not to serve a two bit warrant on some guy who may have been involved in robbing a gas station.

The police now seek to escalate every situation instead of de-escalating, and there is absolutely no doubt that thousands of completely innocent people have been unnecessarily maimed and killed by this faux-warrior mentality.

I have read comments from both sides of the political spectrum and I wish to say I am with the conservative thought and I will state although I do not own or carry any concealed weapon I fault no one who does and I just wish to add that the problem could be that those that like us to give up our rights, is it because you would act the way you fear, others would act. Just my humble take.
