HISTORY

Historic Photo Location
updated: Mar 29, 2014, 1:00 PM

By SBWATCHER

Where is this intersection in Santa Barbara? Judging from the vintage automobiles, this photograph was probably taken around 1918-1920. The house on the corner looks familiar, but there are many houses with that architectural style (Craftsman?) in the city. There are a few signs in the image that might provide clues, but the photograph is not clear enough to read them easily or at all, even when scanned in high resolution. The two signs on a post in the center appear to be mileage signs. The bottom one is completely unreadable. The top one may have an arrow at the top pointing to the right with "Santa Barbara - Santa Maria - San Francisco" underneath, but the image is too blurry to be sure. There appear to be mileage numbers following each but the numerals are illegible. There is a large sign near the roof of the building at far right with only part of the lettering visible. The letters "DR..." start the top line and "PRE..." start the line below. ("Drugs - Prescriptions"? Dry Cleaning - Pressing"?) On the edge of the small tile roof over the door is a small sign that reads, "Love Ne..." Another sign on the wall at eye level is mostly unreadable but may have the word "Drugs" at top. So maybe the building is a drug store?

Update:
Sometimes even the smallest clues can lead to identification of a historic photograph. The photograph of an unidentified intersection posted yesterday was a tough one, but thanks to clues from Neal and other edhatters the mystery has been solved. Here is another photograph of the same intersection taken at about the same time (late 1920s) that turned up while pursuing leads from Edhat. It shows the intersection of Montecito St. and Milpas St., looking northwest. Milpas St. runs north to the right and Montecito St. runs across the image from left to right. The distinctive street light hangs from wires in the middle of the intersection and the same mileage sign can be seen (from the opposite side) at left center. The building in the center of the photograph on the corner is the "Montecito Pharmacy" at 301 N. Milpas St. The large sign near the top of the building reads, "Drugs - Prescriptions". Thank you, edhatters!
