What was Up with the Police Helicopter?
updated: Mar 21, 2014, 8:07 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

Around 7:15 p.m., a police helicopter was circling around the area between Mission and Micheltorena near Mission Creek (and beyond) for about 20 minutes or more. Does anyone know what was going on?

It seems to be going further than that, seeing it up to ortega and possibly further. Might have something to do with Joe Biden?? Heard his Motorcade was spotted about an hour ago...

It's circling in montecito too! It's for Biden. Have a feeling we will hear more soon. I heard the motor Cade about an hr ago it wasn't normal sounding sirens. According to the time line of the traffic stuff it should be stopping soon.

Excellent question. I live near Mission and State. This Helicopter has buzzed over SB repeatedly tonight. Very loud and annoying. I initially thought it was a medivac heading for Cottage, but it repeatedly passed over Cottage and then again headed over downtown toward the beach. I wonder why the repeated low altitude buzzing over the city. Maybe related to the Biden visit?

I'm hearing it down at West Beach, now I wish the VP spent the night in Montecito.

Here in San Roque, it sounded like it was landing in the yard! All the windows rattled each time it made another pass over the house!

Been hearing the helicopter circle here (5 blocks north of the Fess Parker Resort)t for the last 25 minutes. I wish Mr Biden was visiting in Ventura…it's driving me nuts!

I am right near the train station and I have not heard it now for the last five minutes, after a good many flyovers. From my experience when the police are flying lower and slow they are either using night vision, or more than likely, thermal imaging looking for someone in the area. I jumped on here hoping to have a report from the scanner, but nothing so far.

Does anyone know SB Sherrif's have a heli with thermal imaging?

Just as I am typing this I hear they are coming back again.

I know SBSO had one chopper for sure with thermal imaging - it looked like it had sphere the size of large beach ball on the "chin'' of the cockpit - haven't seen that thing for a few years though.

Living near Roosevelt School, heard it for a few minutes, didn't pay attention, wasn't annoying like the Earl Warren concert last year. Jeez - am thinking about people in DC who have their lives interrupted regularly with diplomatic and gov't motorcades.

@071 What is your experience? FYI that wasn't the SB Sheriff flying over, it was the U.S. Secret Service.

It was a news helicopter not sheriff or secret service

@067 - If your windows rattle that much, it's time to get new windows.

"For the win!" Yeah, right - it really does boggle the mind that some people are in such deep denial that they actually applaud and even make excuses for such an over the top exercise in waste and stupidity as this.

About $3 million of borrowed (tax) money was spent so Joe Biden could supposedly raise $125,000. Yay!

It wasn't a news chopper or SB Sheriffs or the Secret Service bird, it was a CHP chopper likely with members of the service on board.

I bet a big part of that 3 million was for breakfast at El Encanto.

Pretty intrusive noise, the price of protecting the Veep. What can you do? Don't want him harmed, don't want him here either. Mission Canyon Old Lady

The helicopter was not to protect him it was to make sure he didn't lose his way and get lost coming from the airport to Montecito.

147P - Believe me, if I could get new windows I would. But I rent a house built in 1940....great deal I got going (since after all my years in SB I could never really afford to buy here) so I will not complain about the windows! It appeared Biden came into town more around 3:00pm, with a helicopter escort over the freeway (as seen from Muni golf course) so what was it doing in the early evening? escort to the fundraiser???

So when there is a fire and we need helicopters dropping water to save our homes they must be grounded at night, but if the VP is in town eating expensive food with some rich ding dongs they keep flying at night? Hmmm, sounds about right.
