Flickering Lights
updated: Mar 21, 2014, 8:32 AM

What's with the flickering lights around 11:15pm Thursday? It doesn't seem very windy. We're on upper Modoc - anybody else being bugged ?

Be glad your lights were merely flickering. Our electricity was off from 11:15 - 12:15 last night.

We had momentary brown outs around the same time off Turnpike near In-N-Out.

Something is odd with the system these days. Not sure if it is due to smart meters or possible hacking of the system. We have transformers blowing every week and sudden surges and twinkling. I hope it is not part of some sort of sinister plot to come as it has been shown they can hack into power grids now.

We experienced it near Cottage Hospital too. I just thought my roommates were using too many outlets at once.

Power went out in Samarkand area about 1045. Went to sleep then, so didn't see when it came back.

Maybe EMF interference from drones overhead as security for Veep?

The SCE website has a map of current outages. I checked it last night when our power went out in Samarkand.

It was listed as a planned outage to last about an hour and was to upgrade equipment.

It was raining at our house, under clear skies, at 11:15pm. Big drops for about 3 minutes. Very weird.

Lights were flickering in West Downtown as well around the same time last night. I thought it was just the fact that I was tired, but they repeatedly flickered. No power outage though.

Also flickered on the Riviera at that time last night, but no outage.

Smart meters cause flickering? No. EMF? Drones? No and no. Hackers, and lions and tigers and bears, NO.

Things break. Flickering is often a loose connection, or possibly an arc-over. Much of our electrical grid dates back to the Eisenhower administration, and doesn't get replaced *until* it breaks.

My usual worry when flickering or outages occur is from the potential power surge that can and has fried many local electronic components over the years.

Thank the universe every day that we still have electricity (and water, and natural gas). People are using more and more, and there are more and more people too. The grid is old, tenuous, and performs amazingly well considering how fragile it is in how many places. Expect much more of the same until we get serious about upgrading and protecting our infrastructure. Please remember these boring infrastructure issues when you vote or talk with our elected representatives.

Flickered couple times, then i heard the telltale siren of a firetruck.

Could have been an accident.

And no ones hacking smartmeters, i dont get the witch hunt about smartmeters.

The power outage extended into most of upper state street up to Hope Avenue as well.

832, I do agree. It was a pretty extensive outage; I'm near Cottage; I know it was out in San Roque/Ontare/Hope. But there was a house across from me that still had power. We're having an awful lot of them all over SB. No wind last night; I did not hear a transformer blow. Planned, my a$$. lol

I still can't get my extended basic cable channels back! I've run"auto program" several times. grrrrr.

If anyone sees this, do you have any suggestions? I'll call Cox again...

YES! We lost our Cox signal, too! But not the lights.

Power flicked a few times up on Lincolnwood then went out for several hours. The first time they were restored I took a few minutes to see if it was really back on and reset the TV, alarm clocks, microwave and two TV's and it went back off again for another 1/2 hour. It was like a two year old finally reaching the the switch on the wall and turning it off and on. I finally got a hold of someone at their call line and they said they were "working" on it. I heard fire engines too and figured it was probably a accident, but when power was restored I went on their website and it did have a pin on Santa Barbara saying it was a voluntary outage. If, indeed it was a planned outage why didn't they let us know ahead of time so we could prepare?

920, did you get it back?! All your channels? I guess so.
Funny, my internet connection is okay, obviously. I used it when the power came back on around 1 a.m.
