Has anyone been up to Figueroa Mt. recently? What's the report on the poppies and lupine this spring?

You can contact: Helen Tarbet at 805-925-9538, ext. 246, or by e-mail at htarbet@fs.fed.us.

to get the best information about the blooms up there. I live in the valley and don't see color on the mountain, which in good years it's super obvious. I copied that information from last years flower report on Edhat located here:

Due to the dearth of rain, I wouldn't expect an impressive showing this year...

Lots of poppies in the valley right now. Haven't seen any lupine yet.

Poppies are blooming in my yard on the Mesa. They started early this year, usually not until late February, but they were at least two weeks before that.

Both Lupine and poppies on the drive up 101 to SY. Lupine mostly along the side of the road where runoff gives the soil a bit more water for them to sprout.

Actually, if they got the same rain there that we got here in SB -- a big deal to arid-area seeds and roots -- they might take advantage of that and put on quite a display. Isn't it a little bit early?

If poppy's sprung up in your yard early it's because you water your yard and it was a hot February.

Fig is bare mostly and will not be impressive. Most of the ground cover is sparse at best. The last rain did enough to save the trees for another year. Shrubs and brush is still mostly dead and some of it was saved by the rain but will be nice tinder come July.

Yesterday I was out Happy Canyon Rd past the first Forest Service gate to the top of the first ridge, and counted maybe 3 or 4 dozen clumps along the road, no other wildflowers seen. Talked to Helen just after the last rain, and she doubted Figeroa area would see any color this year. Too little, too late. Poppies especially need to germinate in fall.
