Seems a bit of an odd purchase, but hopefully they will improve the food. Farmer Boy currently serves prison level poverty food straight from the can. Hopefully with some deeper pockets backing it now we can have a great new uptown breakfast spot or who knows maybe they plan to change it to a whole new concept which is fine by me.

For decades Farmer Boy had "Awful Good Food" painted on the side of the restaurant. If Brophy's does the same thing I would recommend that they say "Awfully Good Seafood" Rather than "Awful Good Seafood" Who wants to eat good seafood that tastes "Awful"?

"Awful good" was a saying back in the day.

Let's hope they don't turn it into another mediocre seafood place. That's all we need in SB.

Brophy's does serve both awful and good food. So this is a good addition to the brand.

Family should be careful with this non-diversified approach to owning so many restaurants.

"Corporatizing" local establishments might also cause backlash, especially if you start cutting costs to manage all this leverage.

Good for them. It'll be interesting to see if their food tastes any different away from the elbow to elbow crush of their harbor establishment. And it would sure be nice to have another dining choice on Upper State. Hoorah!

The restaurant business seems to be lucrative if it is managed correctly and the location is right.

With Cajun kitchen, Max's, and Esau's it will be reasonably hard to resurrect it as a notable breakfast restaurant. The bigger problem they have is the noise level, there is nothing relaxing about having to scream over to your breakfast friends over all those slamming dishes, terrible acoustcs in Farmer Boy restaurant!

Thank God. I really hope they make some huge changes.

Good. Good people, decent food, decent value and they seem nice to their employees.

I grew up going to Farmer Boy for Sunday breakfast, but last time I was there I was so sickened by the filth that I couldn't eat. I am quite sure the walls, ceiling, vents, floors, corners, chairsc booths and counters haven't had a thorough cleaning in at least two decades. It was absolutely disgusting. I can't believe people can eat there.

Awfully good was the food then - now it's just awful

I work for a company that grew rapidly within about a year - we are going strong but wow, lots of adjustments and lots of clean-up for the companies we acquired. I wish the family the best of luck - they'll get the recipe right. That place is always crowded - it just needs some love and windex.

Awfully is just an adverb based on the word awful. While the word can mean disagreeable or objectional, it can also mean "filled with awe" or "inspiring awe".

Just remember what happened to Sambo's and Carrow's when they decided to expand. They didn't learn that one excellent restaurant is better than a bunch of crappy ones. And look at how the awful Smoke 'n Barrel is dragging down Holdren's.

Please keep my beloved omelettes! Better hash browns, fine (like Cajun Kitchens'; don't know how they can be so different). I need my giant jack cheese, onion, spinach & sometimes bacon Farmer Boy omelette! (I take home the bacon I can't finish for another meal.)
I grew up on the northside; it's the only place I still go to that's older than me. Love the sweet dinner rolls, the pancakes, the memories of my friends' first jobs; wonderful meals with beloved people, some of whom are now gone. I love the place. SB does indeed need some greasy spoons. Go ahead, flame if you like. :-)

Congrats, Karl, on your retirement!!

Word on the street is the Farmer Boy is being shuttered and will get a complete remodel and will open as an entirely new restaurant. That makes a lot more sense then continuing on in its current state.

Yay! Once upon a time Farmer Boy was an "old favorite", but sadly it just became old, rundown and rather dirty. Stopped going there a few years ago. Looking forward to getting a new restaurant in the neighborhood.

The same quality of restoration that went into Joe's Cafe may be applied to Farmer Boy - preserve the icon & update the rest. Could be done very nicely.

Good luck Karl! You are the real Farmer Boy.

Thanks for reminding me of the meaning of awful too!

I'm in awe and it was fully nice of you.

Why does everyone keep calling him Karl? His name is Ralph. Is Karl a nickname from Karleskint?

Not "filthy", just well worn. The staff are family to all. Can't think of a better place that represents the pre-yuppie invasion. We have been going since 1958, and will miss those times.

Thank goodness! I went to Farmer Boy's for the first time in about 20 years because a friend wanted to go there. The breakfast was OK, but the place was filthy. I vowed never to return. Now, hopefully in a few months, I can try it again.

EAR 065 - filthy! Menus sticky....plastic holders of "specials" sticky....everything dirty....including the waiter's shirt, apron, and fingernails....disgusting....
