Windy Harbor Afternoon
updated: Mar 18, 2014, 10:02 AM

By Betsy Cramer

On a windy afternoon, the harbor is a great place for bird watching as various take refuge in calmer waters. Some will paddle about together, heading into the wind, as these buffleheads. Others are massed but, looking closer, you can see the individuals, the interactions, the skimmers often with the gulls, stretching their wings; the pelicans rather phlegmatic on the shore, except for the very young, the one on the left, playful; skittering about was a small flock of willets or maybe godwits (?), diving, dancing, speeding about the harbor just for the fun of it.
