Audi Mechanic
updated: Mar 17, 2014, 3:00 PM

I'm looking for a good Audi mechanic for my Q-7 diesel. I've looked through the referral section and the posts are a bit old. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good Audi mechanic in Santa Barbara?

Henry and Paula, owners of Schneider Autohaus. Whether you have a Mini Cooper, BMW, Porsche or Audi you are going to pay top dollar for repairs. Henry is a really good guy.

**OP here, we purchased the car at Audi SB, but we're at the end of the extended care period. It just needs a routine service and I wanted to avoid the $$$$ the dealership charges if possible. Thank you for all the suggestions so far!

@732: Not necessarily true. When I had my Mercedes 450SEL, service at the dealership cost nearly double what it did at other competent local garages specializing in foreign cars. Just because someone owns an expensive car doesn't mean that (s)he doesn't care about being ripped off. Now that I've downsized to a Passat station wagon, I find that Peter at The Engine Company offers far more bang for the buck service-wise than the VW dealership.

Why don't you ask for the cost of your particular service from the Dealership....? Have you had any check engine lights come on or is one on now?

These modern vehicles are not ones that any mechanic can diagnose and repair. The make specific mechanic and shop are tied into the manufacturer and receive support, updates and technical service bulletins that are specific to your car. Service doesn't mean 'tuneup' anymore.

Your service might be as simple as an oil change. For that you can go to any of the mirage of fast oil change joints around town!

I recently had a brake job on my Audi...the Dealer was cheaper than the others I checked, including some mentioned in this thread.

SB Auto Group works on my MBZ. Very happy. I think they work on Audi. I don't think they charge more than others. I think it is a myth dealers charge more.

**OP here again, thanks for all the great suggestions. Perhaps I should do a bit of shopping, by calling Audi and some of the mechanics mentioned here for a comparison. It's always helpful to me, to get some personal insights from Edhat land…thank you!!

Any good light diesel mechanic ought to be able to work on your Audi, but be sure to check their experience with DIESEL engines.

I can remember my mother driving an Audi in 1970. Even the so-called "dealer" usually couldn't get parts for this little stinker. It was a combination of ultra-advanced technology (like front wheel drive and overhead cams) and archaic technology (mechanical brakes with a pedal for the front and a hand lever for the back, magneto ignition) so very few mechanics would touch it. Audi has made the transition to a mainstream automaker building (almost) mainstream cars so you'll find someone really good if you check qualifications
