Ringing Mission Bells
updated: Mar 14, 2014, 8:06 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

Last night at midnight, the Mission bells rang for 5 minutes. I looked online to see if March 14th is a Catholic holiday, but didn't find anything. Does anyone know why the bells were ringing?

I heard them too. No clue what it was about. Very creepy though.

There was a power outage somewhere, maybe the power surge triggered / reset the bell mechanism.

Midnight was the start of friday, which during Lent, symoblizes the churches observance of Jesus' crucification. You avoid eating meat today, as a symbol of sacrifice, one that Jesus made on the cross.

OP here - I saw my lights flicker and thought the same thing about the bells. They lasted almost exactly five minutes, so I thought it might be more than a coincidence. But I bet you're right , 614!

615 Thank you for clarifying. It was beautiful, not frightening at all. It seems we hear less of the bells these days.

So is it because of the power outage or because of Lent?

Never heard of the "Catholic Friday in Lent" observance, except for Good Friday. Raised Catholic, with 12 years of Catholic school. Probably ringing (on purpose) at midnight isn't such a great idea. Perhaps just a mistake caused by a power surge.

Mardi Gras in NOLA, even Robert Bernstein's reporting from Ojai last week, should've been a clue.... beginning of Lent.

615 - you meant to say "I" avoid eating meat today. Personally I will have a nice steak tonight.

Catholic Friday. No meat. Hence the deals on McDonalds filet of fish and the return of the Carls Jr cod sandwhich.

Last time they rang was when pope John Paul 2nd died... Soo using logic id say the pope who stepped down has died...

Raised Catholic, never heard of "Catholic Friday" though we did abstain from meat on Fridays, all the Fridays. The start of Lent is not any Friday, but Ash Wednesday. (Hence the big party the day before, "Fat Tuesday", to live it up before the Lenten abstaining.) Yes, there is Good Friday, but today isn't it. Good Friday is the Friday before Easter Sunday, so this year will be April 15th.

Oops, 670.

Good Friday is April 18, 2014 and Easter Sunday is April 20, 2014 this year.

I just don't want anyone making plans for the wrong dates.

Am a more sound sleeper than I thought. I live in the Mission neighborhood and didn't hear anything.

I'd go with the power surge explanation. I live a few blocks behind the Mission and, just before midnight, we had a power "flicker" that was strong enough to knock out the landline phone answering machine. I went outside and the Mission bells were going to town. In terms of Lent, it indeed starts on Ash Wednesday. In terms of the "no fish" rule, that pretty much disappeared after the Vatican II Council in the early 60s. Time was, Catholics were forbidden to have meat on ANY Friday. It was considered a mortal sin. I went to Catholic School for 13 years and, boy, do I remember Lent.

A Catholic
OLE moved to a little town of Catholics. That was okay, but the neighbours had a problem with his barbecuing venison every Friday.
Neighbours went over to Ole and managed to convince him to convert. The priest put his hand on Ole's head and said, "You were born a Lutheran, you were raised a Lutheran, and now," he said as he sprinkled water over Ole's head, "now you are a Catholic!"
The following Friday evening at suppertime, the neighbors smelled the aroma of grilled deer steaks. As they approached the fence, they heard Ole say,
"You were born a deer, you were raised a deer, and now," he said as he sprinkled seasoning salt over the choice tender loin cut, "now you are a walleye!"

Just spoke to the SB Mission. They are not sure what triggered the bells at midnight but they said it was an accident. Once the bells started ringing they could not easily turn them off. They are very sorry. The computer program has been adjusted to prevent this kind of thing in the future. Hurrah!

Sorry folks, but they rang for almost exactly TEN minutes. And i was on hold with the SBPD non-emergency line for about eight of those minutes which proves it! The bells stopped at almost exactly ten after midnight.

Strange that some Catholics have never heard of Catholic Fridays. Been a thing forever during lent.

On Lincolnwood the lights flickered for about two minutes. Just long enough to make me have to reset the TV's, microwave, stove, stereo, computer, etc..... Does anyone know why we have been having so many outages lately?

Ok. Just read the next post. That could be the cause for our outages in this area. The power was out for most of the day and into the night in Hope Ranch a few days ago.

Speaking of power flickers, my lights flicker every night around 10pm - I live about 5 blocks from the Mission so wonder if there's electronic bats in the belfry in this general area.

That's nothing. The Lutheran church on Modoc rings their "electronic" bells every hour from 10AM to 5PM. Playing parts of hymns for 2.5 mins. each time.

It's a classic case of them shoving their worship down other peoples throats.
According to the S.B City noise ordinance they should not be allowed to do this. It is disruptive, repetitive, unnatural, unnecessary and is much louder than the ambient noise of the neighborhood. I think it's time to file a complaint!! Anyone with me?
