Just out of curiosity, I have seen a lot of chatter lately on the site about this " Lake Arrellaga." What, and where is it ?

"Hilarious" commenters nickname for the pond in Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens

Sorry, that information is for locals only. Unless you are an official card-carrying Local, we cannot give you that information.

A "local's only" spot best not discussed on public internet forums. It is neat and extremely beautiful though, ask a local nicely in person and maybe the will show you.

Lake Arrellaga is not the Alice Keck pond. That is technically the Hobo Park Puddle. As someone who has spent quite a bit of time at Lake Arrellaga, I can safely say that there is no other place like it in SB. If you know it, you know that outsiders are not welcome.

It's a place that a certain commenter made up to comfort himself while his mom is at work and unable to make him a toasted cheese sandwich and bring it down to his basement lair. If you look closely, you'll notice that posts from this commenter referencing "Lake Arrellaga" happen only when the World of Warcraft servers are down.

836... C'mon, that's not nice. Let folks have their mythical play-land. If the religious can have their Garden of Eden why can't "Locals-only" have their Lake Arrellaga?

I'll be telling Facebook God about you so beware of what happens on Wednesday.... (it's Smite Wednesday).

COMMENT 501015P agree helpful negative off topic

Local is a lot about where your heart is. You'd know if you're a local. Doesn't matter about other's definition. I've lived here for 45 years and think Santa Barbara is a wonderful place, but I am not a local. If I went back to my hometown, they'd probably not consider me a local - but I would.

COMMENT 501017 agree helpful negative off topic

2014-03-07 03:56 PM

Being born somewhere doesn't give anyone an inherent right to the place. And I'd be happy to tell this to any anybody who thinks they are somehow superior to anyone else by virtue of birthright, in person.

If you're trying to make it clear that SB locals tend to be small-minded snobs, you're doing a heckuva job!

COMMENT 501024 agree helpful negative off topic

2014-03-07 04:13 PM

It's pretty simple 017. You were either born here or you weren't. It has nothing to do with being superior.

I just don't think it's right to move to SB and declare the locals small minded snobs.

But if that makes me one for saying so, so be it. It's just not something I would ever do living in another place.

I've lived here 18 years, well over 1/3 of my life. I have lived in SB longer than any other location in the US. I am a local.

No you say? Then show me your membership card that declares you a "local".

COMMENT 501041 agree helpful negative off topic

2014-03-07 04:40 PM

It's pretty simple 024, being born here doesn't make you a snob, it's saying things like "Then go back to wherever that armpit of a town is you grew up in." that makes you a snob.

And considering your lovely choice of words, it's pretty much impossible to believe that you "wouldn't ever" go to another place and talk smack about the locals.

So if I was born a few hours away, lived in SB for 30+ years including all schools years through undergrad degree and all employment, I'm not a "local" because my birth was elsewhere?

But someone born in SB who moved to Zimbabwe at age 1 and never came back is a local?

If that's your definition, I don't want to be in your local club.

There are people who moved here in the last few years that consider themselves locals..I always thought if you lived in the area or California born you were a local..I think there could be honorary locals. I'm not sure all of our city officals are true locals I always thought they should be..Just my opinion. Unless of course your from the Chicago area then were all Loco..

It makes me sad that we have to fight over who is a "local". Going by several of the posts above I don't qualify as a local because I wasn't born in Santa Barbara. My parents moved the family to Santa Barbara when I was 3. I attended local schools from K-12, I own my own home downtown and have lived in Santa Barbara my whole life. I still hang out with friends from the neighborhood I grew up in, my parents still live in the same house they bought in 67. Santa Barbara is a beautiful place and we make it ugly by being a bunch of elitist snobs, really really sad.

Native of SB is one who is born here , PERIOD. A true Native is of Chumash decent. I am only the third generation in my house but still feel relatively 'new', because although I was born in St. Francis Hospital (and if you do not know where that was you are VERY new), I am not of Chumash decent. Yes, all you see that is beautiful here is the result of many struggles to keep it that way. Alice Keck Park Gardens used to be (an abandoned) hotel when I was a kid. It almost became a condo development, and yes, you are welcome...we FOUGHT for that!
