Fuel Smell And Boat Salvage
updated: Mar 06, 2014, 3:00 PM

By John Palminteri

FUEL SMELL BRINGS OUT FIRE AND COAST GUARD DURING BOAT SALVAGE.

A small fuel leak was reported at East Beach in Santa Barbara during a salvage operation for a storm-damaged boat. Nearby volleyball players noticed a smell and called Santa Barbara City Fire. The Coast Guard was also notified.

Brent Aston with Big B's Boat Disposal says the vessel was in bad shape and leaking a small amount of diesel fuel left in the tank, when he arrived with a crew and heavy equipment.

A small sand berm was built to confine the working area from the afternoon surf. No environmental offenses were detected and the salvage operation continued. The waterfront department says the salvage crew has a clean track record and after every piece of the boat is removed, the sand will be groomed.
