Sea Lion Rescue
updated: Feb 28, 2014, 9:35 AM

By Steve McGovern

At Goleta Pier yesterday. Young sea lion was in trouble. Under the pier, he kept trying to get back in the water. First the riptide would drag him out fifty feet or so, then the next wave (big ones ) would knock him back in, sometimes ramming him into a piling. I snapped some pictures (with a telephoto so don't bother telling me I shouldn't have bothered it) but I didn't have my phone and wouldn't know who to call anyway. Eventually, the sea lion got into the water, and I lost track of him. A short while later a Marine Mammal rescue truck went down the beach, and the man trapped the sea lion, put him in a dog crate and took him away. It was all done very quickly, very cleanly. The man who did it knew what he was doing, and did it well. The animal looked healthy enough... I suspect he was one of those babies left on the beach by his mom while she hunted. But, bad place to leave him. I'm sure he'll be fine now.
