Scanner Reports 2-28-14

By Roger the Scanner Guy

Rainy FRYday. Don't like getting wet but very grateful for the rain. They say this rain is like the rain we got back in 1983; that rain lasted a little longer. As far as waterspout action, I don't remember waterspouts back then. I do remember flooded coastal parking lots at the beach, and Palm trees falling into the surf, boats washed up on the sand. I remember watching Connie Chung doing a newscast near the Marina and clearing brush and rocks to prevent flooding at Montecito Shores, 31 Years ago. Hopefully we will get enough rain this season and won't have to make too many changes to conserve water. Of course we should do those things regardless if we have enough water or not.

I don't think about driving and using a cell phone or texting very much because I don't have a car, or a cell phone. It's one of those things that pretty much goes over my head unless I'm crossing a street, then it's always important to keep your eyes on drivers to make sure they are paying attention. When I stand in front of my home watching motorists drive by, I see many people using cell phones and I think they are either insane, or so self-obsessed they don't care about anyone but themselves. I guess the punishment for using a cell phone or texting while driving isn't enough. People are just not taking it serious enough. I wonder how someone might feel if they ran over a child and killed them while texting or talking on a cell phone. Would they lie about such an accident or cop to the fact they took a young life because they thought it more important to talk on the phone or text a message? Personally I think most people would lie about it, not thinking there was anything wrong with it. After all, the child crossed into the path of their vehicle and cell phones are so much a part of our lives now it's just another fact of life and that is the insane part. Many drivers think it's more up to other people to get out of their way to prevent being hit or ran over, then it is for them to be responsible while operating a motor vehicle. I heard a couple last week the woman in the Mitsubishi that ran the light at Anacapa and Micheltorena, I think she was on Micheltorena gabbing away on a cell phone while cruising along, and I don't think she ever realized that she ran that red light she might know if she got hit broadside, and lived through it. Then there was the guy on the scooter in the Mission Street underpass with the kid steering the bike as he kicked back on the back and texted someone. Where the HELL did he get his brains, in a box of Cracker Jack? The more technology we get the less we use our brains.
