Wild Animals Welcome Rain
updated: Feb 27, 2014, 7:54 AM

By John Palminteri

The drought has had a serious impact on the wildlife in our local hills, but the double shot of rain this week should help in many areas. Deer grazing alongside Paradise Rd. Wednesday have been looking for new water sources for months. The nearby Santa Ynez River has only a few small water holes left. Many sections are bone dry, and down to the rock base. At the Upper Oso campground, hikers and mountain bikers were warned to leave before the rain came through yesterday afternoon. The gate at the first river crossing was scheduled to be closed, at least through the current wave of weather. The hills where the White Fire burned last May are prone to mudslides that could block the roads in and out.
