Press Release

Members of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department Search and Rescue Team, UC Santa Barbara Police detectives and Sheriff's Department deputies, late this morning found what is believed to be a personal item belonging to the 19-year-old UCSB student who was the victim of a sexual assault on Sunday morning.

The detectives located what is believed to be an item belonging to the survivor of the attack, as well as items that they think might belong to the suspects in the case. The items were found in what police are describing as a semi-secluded area on the edge of the UCSB campus.

As a result of today's discovery, the case has been transferred to the jurisdiction of the UCSB Police Department, which will continue to work closely with detectives of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office as they seek to identify and apprehend the suspects in the case.

UCSB has increased police patrols on campus and in the community. It also will be taking immediate steps to improve security by installing new lighting fixtures and additional security cameras on campus property. Authorities are hoping that someone may have seen or heard something that can assist them with the investigation and the apprehension of the suspects in this case. If you have any information regarding this crime, please call 911 immediately. To leave an anonymous tip, call 805-681-4171.

UCSB Police Department will be issuing any additional updates about this ongoing investigation.

If you have any information or questions about this or any other Law Enforcement related issue, please contact the UCSB Police Department or 805-681-4171 to remain anonymous.
