Fatal 154 Accident

The California Highway Patrol has released the name of the victim in the fatal traffic accident on Highway 154 Wednesday afternoon. Michael A. Okerblom, 31, of Nipomo, was declared dead at the scene. According to the CHP the crash occurred at about 2:40 p.m. when an eastbound Hyundai sedan struck a dirt embankment north of the roadway, then crashed into a westbound Lexus SUV just west of San Antonio Creek Road. Susan Jorgensen, 66, of Santa Ynez was the driver of the Lexus and suffered minor injuries.

CHP reports the cause of the accident remains under investigation and it is not known whether alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor.

UPDATE by the Office of Emergency Management

Date/Time: Wednesday, February 26 at 3:30 pm

Location: State Route 154 at Old San Marcos Road in Santa Barbara County.

State Route 154 is fully closed in both directions from Old San Marcos Road to Cathedral Oaks Road due to a fatal traffic accident.

Electronic message boards have been activated to inform the public about this closure.Motorists may use U.S. Highway 101 as alternate route. There is no estimate as to when State Route 154 will re-open.

At 2:39pm, Santa Barbara County Fire Department (SBC FD) responded to a head-on vehicle accident, located on Highway 154, 1/4 mile north of San Antonio Creek Rd.

SBCFD responded two engines and a battalion chief to the scene. SBCFD was assisted by the California Highway Patrol, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office, and American Medical Response. The accident involved an SUV and a mid- sized sedan. One person died at the scene and another was treated for minor injuries. Highway 154 was closed in both directions. The road was wet at the time of the accident due to rain.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by the CHP.
