Adult Hip-Hop Dance Lessons
updated: Feb 26, 2014, 1:14 PM

I'd like to ask your readers if they have a recommendation of a place in Santa Barbara/Goleta for an Adult (over 50) to take Hip-Hop Dance lessons. My nephew is getting married in June and wants everyone in the family to do a 30 second hip- hop dance solo at the wedding reception. I tried following some of the online/YouTube videos, but was told by my good friend that I looked like "Jerry Lewis with two broken legs impersonating Frankenstein" and that I needed to do more with my hands and arms when dancing. Not trying to be a professional hip- hopper, just need 30 seconds worth. Thank you very much.

Find the video of Jimmy Fallon and Will Smith "history of hip hop" and copy the moves.

Watch out he may post the video to YouTube, watch it go viral and embarrass the heck out of your family.

There has got to be a "meet-up" for something like that. If not, a friend of mine teaches a hip-hop dance class at Westmont...might be worth looking into!

Hip-Hop is not a specific dance it is a lifestyle. For some good moves check out the youtubes, a class may be overkill for prepping for a wedding dance.

I used to take a hip hop cardio class 24 Hour Fitness several years back. It was a lot of fun and you'll pick up quite a few moves just joining a class like that. I think the instructor started his own studio, Rhythm Dance Studio & Fitness on lower State Street, but I am not certain.

Look into Dance Unlimited. Mostly kids classes, but they teach some for adults as well. Dance Unlimited 5370 Hollister Ave #1, Santa Barbara, California

Harout Aristakessian specializes in teaching hip hop and pop to women with little or no dance experience. Most of the women who take his classes are over 40, and many are even in their 50s and 60s. He breaks down routines into easy-to-learn moves. It's a great cardio workout and a lot of fun. He's on Facebook (Dance with Harout) or contact him via email - dancewithharout (at) gmail (dot) com

Try World Dance. They meet four times a week: Tuesday and Thursday at 7:00 PM and Saturday and Sunday mornings at 9:15. It is a dance workout and it's fabulous! They meet at Santa Barbara Dance Center on Canon Perdido near De La Vina. I believe there's a coupon on EdHat for two free classes. I've been going for about 1 1/2 years and love it. It's dances from all around the world and a little pop. It's attended by women from 17 to 70, but primarily women in their 50s. It's so much fun!

Rhythm & Dance Fitness Studio has hip hop classes in SantaBarbara. You can pay for just one class, about $10. The instructor Tamar teaches you a routine each class, you could learn 30 seconds worth and you'd be good to go! I used to go when i worked less, and there was an older gentlemen that was a regular. The instructor is very welcoming to newbies. The website is doingthemostdotcom (dot com not spelled out, It wouldnt let me add the link since im not a paid subscriber)

Tell your nephew you'll do it only if he opens and fully funds Roth IRAs for him and his new wife every year.

I second the recommendation for Harout Aristakessian. His class is lots of fun and welcoming to new people. and the moves are much simpler and less complicated than Tamar's. There are definitely women in their 50's, 60's and 70's, as well as 40's and younger. It's a great class and great workout!!!
