Forgotten Bridge
updated: Feb 26, 2014, 11:15 AM

By John Wiley

I like old abandoned structures and roads, because they evoke days gone by. So flying over on Tuesday Cachuma's water level had fallen so low, there was a long stretch of the old road to Santa Ynez sitting in the parched earth of the lakebed. Somehow I hadn't noticed this old bridge on that road, with footprints in the dried mud in the upper right. In the second pic you can see the old foundations on what used to be an island when lake levels first started to drop. In the last pic you can see the whole stretch of exposed road parallel to Hwy.154 from bottom to top of the frame, though it's harder to make out near the top. Could the park ranger actually drive on that road, and across the bridge?
