I just signed up for weekly shares from Community Seafood and get my first share this Thursday. Does anyone have any feedback based on their experience?

I can't wait to hear yours! and others. Tell us what you get, how you cook it and how it is.

Keith & Tiffany own SLAYTON?! I met that dog years ago; I think he owned or was hanging out with someone else at the time. Cool!

Our family has been receiving a weekly Community Seafood share for over 7 months now, and I enthusiastically recommend it!

Because fish-- especially the local, wild-caught product CS provides-- is such a healthy protein source, I like to serve it to my family as much as possible. Our budget doesn't allow us to indulge as much as I'd like, but I feel that we get great value with Community Seafood. This is what seafood is supposed to taste like. The product is so unfailingly fresh that even the simplest preparations come out tasting amazing. This is key, because we're working parents and don't have oodles of time on our hands. Whether it's yellowtail, black cod, rockfish, ridgeback shrimp, salmon, etc., we can just do a quick marinade, throw it on the grill for a few minutes, and voila. Then we can spend our time enjoying a great family meal together. We look forward to it every week.

We believe that the CS business model is good for local fisherpeople and our local ecology. You can read more about this on the website www.communityseafood.com. It may sound corny, but I also experience a deeper sense of connection with my fellow Santa Barbarans/Goletans as a result of this program. I love reading the bios of the fisherwomen and -men bringing in each week's catch (emailed to us along with info about the catch and several recipe options each week). And I feel like I share important values with my fellow fish picker-uppers. Even though I don't know most of them, I experience a sense of camaraderie. And that feels great.

Finally, the service and membership management are first-rate. It's easy to sign-up, change your share amount or frequency, put your share on vacation hold, etc. -----Note: We are a family of two adults and one preschooler. With a 1-lb share, we had plenty of food for all three of us, but not much leftover; we recently increased to 1.5 lbs/wk so that we can stretch it into two meals.

I got so excited about spreading the CS gospel that I failed to directly address the actual question. Sorry about that, OP! What I like to do is go to the website and check out the Seafood of the Week-- they usually have it posted Monday or Tuesday-- then decide on a recipe that sounds good. I like to have any necessary ingredients ready to go before I pick up the fish so that I can just bring it home and make it the same day. (But it's always good if I leave it in the fridge overnight and make it the next day, too.) As for the pickup itself, it's a good idea to bring a small container or cooler with some ice for transporting the fish home. Enjoy. :-)

Yes, I've been feeling a deficiency of radioactive isotopes like strontium 90, cesium 134 and 137 - will have to eat more fish.

Thanks for the helpful post Corm.; didn't think about brining a small ice chest with me - most excellent idea.

510 - yea, go eat some Foster Farms chicken, or some Rancho Feeding beef. I personally think fish once a week isn't going to make me start glowing.

Wow, does this thread seem like one big ad.

OP here; I have no affiliation with Community Seafood, other than that I hope to enjoy my shares and wanted to get an idea of what to expect. Cormorant may or may not be affiliated, but I don't care, excellent information was provided.

Lets see how much Uni or maybe jellyfish is in the mix this season
Sorry I still prefer less middleman and more support for the buy off the boat type programs

We love CSS! It is so easy and always a pleasant surprise to see what we get. In the past we would purchase fish now and then, now we get it every week. Our portion lasts for two or maybe three meals (last one is maybe tacos - yum!). We have gotten creative with our cooking (parchment paper packets to bake, fish stew cioppino) and have tried things I would have avoided before such as sable fish. Now I look forward to it! CSS has changed our life!!

Cormorant- You have me very interested in joining! Quick question- When there is more than one fish option for the week do you get to choose if you want your share of just that fish or is your share divided between the two options? ie: fish 1 and fish 2 are available so you can request 1lb of fish 2 only, or will you automatically get .5lb of each?

Also, do you have a referral code so we can credit you?

698- that's a good question, and I would email/call CS directly to make sure. In my experience, when there are multiple varieties available at pick-up, it's a first-come, first-served basis-- you don't put in a request for one or the other. (There's always enough fish, but if you get there toward the end of the pick-up time you might not have a choice.) And typically you would just get one type of fish-- especially if your share is .5 or 1 lb. Occasionally you may be able to get a little from column a and a little from column b, but I wouldn't count on it unless you have a larger share. Again, all of this is just my understanding, and it's worth contacting them about it directly. Thanks so much for the referral offer... I don't think there is a referral program.
