Anxiety/Panic Disorder Support Group

Desperately seeking support group for Santa Barbara locals dealing with anxiety/panic disorders. Individual already receiving professional help but would like to connect with other individuals.

I used to suffer from dibilatating anxiety attacks. I finally told myself if my brain was strong enough to take over myself than i was strong enough to take over my brain. I purposely challegened myself to do the things that would trigger attacks. It happened almost immediately. Good Luck! You can do it!

I am sure 65 and I will get chastised for not answering the actual question and instead telling you how "we overcame", but here goes: No caffeine or anything that contains it, drink clean pure water throughout the day at least 8 glasses, eat healthy food....no sugar, take daily vitamin and mineral plus a strong B complex, I like Calm a magnesium drink that you mix with water when I feel stressed. EXERCISE....everytime you feel stressed try to take a walk and if you can join a gym do so and go. DO NOT watch "crap" on TV. Listen to calming music and read uplifting books. Yes, the support group may also help and maybe if you do all of the above you can help a few of them.
Oh most importantly get a thorough checkup, including a very comprehensive thyroid check. Many times these attacks have a physiological or hormonal component that is undiagnosed.

Hmm. I don't know of any current ones, but I'm a little out of the loop. Contact Jon Lukas at the OCD Center in town, he treats anxiety and OCD.

Strongly agree with 065 as I pretty much have the same story. I've tried prescription pills and they do nothing but worsen the problem. I medicate with meditation yoga a little medical grade tetrahydrocannabinol (thc) not that any of those will work for you but I'm just saying it's quite possible for you to cure your self if you just believe keep doing the things that freak you out the most..good luck and no caffeine!!!

Once I become an ed hat member again I will post my e-mail address. I am going to re-sign up in a bit I was going to start a support group a couple of years ago. I suffer from it as well but have it very much under control. I did not know if I would find any one interested but I see here that there are people.. I am not a Therapist or do I hold any license, just been through this and know what you are feeling..

I have severe anxiety in certain situations and absolutely cannot drive on the freeway at this point, and some days just driving around town is impossible. Got so bad at one point that I almost became afraid to leave my house but got past that and have improved, with a little help from ativan and a lot of will power. Still very anxious, I think that I would also benefit from a support group.

065, great tactics! A cheap little paperback by Dr. Claire Weekes, 'Hope and Help for Your Nerves,' encourages you to 'lean into' your panic, daring it to become worse. IOW, try to scare yourself to death.

She says you cannot do it, and this is a way of outwitting the problem.

065 here again. One other thing that really helped me was running. In the beginning of fighting this i would just go run it out day or night when I felt the impending doom feeling coming on strong. You are stronger than anxiety, you have all the tools in your brain to get it done. This is how I over came gnarly OCD aswell. Dive in head first!!

I get those very bad. Take L.Theanine or Zen. Both are natural supplements. If you take it on a regular basis you can prevent them.

I used to have anxiety attacks and was scared I'd pass out while driving. Then it suddenly occurred to me that it hadn't happened and probably wasn't going to happen and that my fear of it happening was the worst part of it. So every time I felt a panic attack coming on, I'd just start slow deep breathing, which took the focus away from the fear. Not surprisingly, given the now well known benefits of deep breathing (think yoga), I managed to get over the panic attacks.and dump the meds I was on.

I realize I haven't answered the OP's original question and don't know of any support groups, but other posters have made some suggestions which I hope will help. Good luck! And don't forget to breathe!

Why on earth would you tell someone not to go to a group to help their problem as one poster mentioned here. You can debate all day about what method is best for easing anxiety, but talking and sharing you ailment with others is only going to help.

The psychiatric nurse at Sansum Clinic's Psychiatry office (681-7517) will have group suggestions. For a great pharmaceutical psychiatrist re: anxiety/panic disorder, see Dr. James Moghtader at that office. I tried everything else and I mean EVERYTHING in town --- neurofeedback, biofeedback, massage, mental 'games,'' etc. to no avail except relief that would last about 2 hours, but he brought me back to myself entirely with the correct meds, in just several weeks.

A man named Dr. Jeffrey Schwartz has done ground breaking work finding that we can use the power of our thoughts to rewire our brain. This pertains to multiple problems that people have. It's really fascinating. .Contact UCLA for more info.. He has written at least one book, Google him.

I also suffer major panic attacks when driving or even being a passenger in a car --- especially when on the freeway. If there are several lanes of traffic on the street going in the same direction, that also affects me -- especially when cars drive so close together. I live in north Oxnard - and if anyone knows of a support group, let me know. I've been dealing with this for almost 20 yrs. I'm retired - so I'm home most of the time. Just the thought of driving over 20 minutes on the street to get somewhere -- gets me panicky.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Some great testimonials here telling what helped individual people. That is the beauty of a support group - it lets you hear lots of things that work for some people. The group leader can make a big difference in effectiveness.

I've experienced panic/anxiety for 20+ years. It's interesting to look back on it now, for cures, for answers. I've taken every pill, every yoga class, read every book, had every medical exam and practiced every unique method of breathing exercises and more.

Reading the comments here, solutions work with a blend of all the above. The anchor is for sure diet. Best to focus on adding nutrition as opposed to removing stimulants although obviously it's hand in hand. I'd like to talk more to anyone interested at anxiousinsb over at the gmale dot calm.
