Closed Gaviota Rest Stops
updated: Feb 20, 2014, 11:35 AM

By Mesa Jim

Why are the rest areas on both the 101 north and south bound @ Gaviota closed? Usually when it's a temporary thing there are just cones across the off ramp. Now there are semi-permanent "CLOSED" signs bolted to the signposts. Could this have something to do with the drought?

Lack of funds to maintain them and they are not as necessary being so close to Buelton for services.

From the CalTrans website:

Gaviota Northbound - Santa Barbara County
This location is closed due to a water main break, ETO is 02/26/14

a search of cal trans dist. 5 website, roadside rests (left menu bar) indicates: "

It's a severe break and some of the area needing to be repaired is difficult to access.

435 - there is no lack of funds to maintain rest areas in California.

There is a lack of funds to do a lot of stuff, why would rest areas be immune to that?

435 clearly you were assuming the answer and really don't have correct information. For future posts, I hope you would consider adding that info when you post, "My opinion is there might be a lack of funds..." When you speak with such conviction you are believable but the information you're sharing isn't true. Let's keep Edhat a place of true news. Otherwise it's a lot of noise.

Thanks to 442, Seedlady and 492 for all the correct info.

This is the most ridiculous place for a rest area anyway. Very dangerous both on and off highway and as the comment above, Buellton is less than 10 miles, it really is no longer necessary. I go by this twice a day and there have been many expensive and lengthy repairs/improvements over the years.

I used to drive from Buellton to Goleta every day 15 to 20 years ago, and now drive from SB north from time to time. Those rest areas have always been closed at least 50% of the time. It's just what they do. I don't know why.

It's a great place for a rest stop, especially if you're heading to or from LA from farther north and don't want to get off to search for parking and a public restroom/friendly restaurant or gas station in SB or Santa Maria. When I lived up north and visited LA, it was the one I always used and it's not true that it's closed 50 percent of the time.

Gaviota is all about the tunnel anyway. Or in the old days, the fighter jet.

I doubt restaurants or gas stations in Buellton want the freeway traffic needing "rest facilities" to drop in just to use theirs. Whenever I've used the one coming south there were quite a few cars there.

I do wish CT would install big flashing signs to "Slow Down!" as many tourists take the corners entering the pass/rest stop area going waaay too fast. They're unprepared for the narrow lanes and tight turns, and for cars slowing to take turnoff to rest stops or re-entering roadway. Wonder what the accident stats are for that spot? And why did Caltrans put them there in the first place?

California has inferior rest stops. Just 2 between SB and SF on 101. In France there are rest stops on the autoroute for about every 30 minutes of driving, the idea being that long spells of steady driving are dangerous.

I hope they will be cleaning them with disinfectants before they're re-opened. Every time we stop at the Gaviota rest stop we catch something icky and there's never soap to wash with. Ugh!

I agree-no business in Buellton wants to provide free restrooms. When I travel I need to stretch my legs as well and do not always have money to spent to access private business rest rooms. I have not found them to be dirty. They do get a lot of use and the public is notoriously careless.
