Grunion Runs
updated: Feb 17, 2014, 2:17 PM

It has been a long time since I have seen Grunions. When is the best time of year to see them in Santa Barbara?

Based on my experience as a youngster I will guess the grunions "run" during a summer full moon. I recall we camped with other families on the grass at east beach, would go out late in the night, catch some grunion and return to the campfire where they were fried and eaten. Those were some fun days; and nights.

Check the internet for answers. They list Santa Barbara as one of the better locations. I believe "grunion" is plural.

Not sure WHEN they run, but the only time i've seen them was in front of the Yacht Club at the breakwater. I think the club's floodlights on the beach made for easy viewing!

Summer full moons, plus tide.

Usually the first run is near the first full or new moon around St. Pat's Day, then continues on through summer. This might be of interest:

Write "grunions" or "grunion" into edhat's search box and you will get pictures from other months. May, June, July, August are what I saw on a quick look.

March to August. It's fun to volunteer to be a "grunion greeter" and count grunion for research too... plus late night beach picnics while waiting for the grunion are awesome!

If you google grunion greeter and Peperdine you will find the dates and more info

Either grunion or grunions is acceptable (and correct) for the plural form.
