Army Reserve Building
updated: Feb 17, 2014, 11:11 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

Does anyone have an update on the status of the Army Reserve Building on the corner of Las Positas and State? I found this link from 2011 http://www.edhat.com/site/tidbit.cfm?nid=50817, but wondered if there was a more current update. It seems a shame for such a large and central space not to be utilized.

I hear that In-and-Out Burgers is looking for a place.

McKenzie park/ SB Pony Baseball is hoping to acquire that property and turn it in to more baseball fields.

Does anyone know where the Army Reserve relocated. Who owns the property??

I suppose it's to much to ask to get a WallMart?

The property is owned by the USA.

573. I wondered how long that would take. But some of us would like an affordable place to shop.

In it's current configuration, it doesn't seem that intersection could handle all the traffic if the space is used for a retail or high-density related activity.

606 - I believe 572 is neither trolling nor stupid but correct. The property is owned by the United States government. AKA USA.

Walmart will never come to Santa Barbara. They do not pay their employees enough to live here.

USA is also the common abbreviation for United States Army.

Peabody elementary school is moving to that location and using the sale of their current location to build the new facility.

It should become a homeless shelter to serve the needy.

I doubt it. Target possibly - but with our water issues, I think the population numbers are going to go down. Sears is not doing that well, right now. Walmart would be nuts to build here.

Did anyone of you vote in the last city election and read the ballot measure pertaining to this property? I don't even live in the city but I am sure some of the commentors do.

Roger - Target for sure - WalMart not a chance in (fill in the blank.)

Little Buellton kept them out as have many other cities in CA.

If they can do it, it's easy-peasy for mega-monied Santa Barbara. They will never even get the plan filed!

The election stated that the lease to the Army is now over. The city now has control of the land, lease free.

Since the city owns it an extension of MacKenzie Park with more services for kids and families seems like the best thing for the whole community.

Whatever the use is, it should be one that puts no further significant demands on the major intersecton of Las Positas and State (and San Roque Road). This itersection functions at a level "D" through much of the day and occasionally at "F". It should also include additional parking facilities that enter from Las Positas only and exit Southbound on State Street at least 300 feet South of the LP/SR intersection. Any exiting allowed from the facility onto Las Positas Road should be into a dedicated right turn lane (only) from that exit all the way to State Street. Any additional buildings located there should also include a (much needed) small police department substation, manned from 8:00 am to 12:00 midnight.

Do people making comments in edhat have any idea what they are talking about or even know where this property is? The property in question is smaller than the parking lot at Loreto Plaza. It will not be a Wal-Mart, a Target nor a new school especially since Peabody School is already larger than this property.

It would be perfect for the city to put in three-story, low-income, housing with no parking as everyone will walk, ride bikes or take the bus to work.

BURNTTHISTLE & 656 - Last Nov's ballot measure had absolutely nothing to do with the city taking over this land. The ballot measure was nothing more than a technicality. Decades ago the city wanted to widen State Street at Las Positas, but the Army's land was in the way. So the city and the Army agreed to swap pieces of land so that the Army could literally "scootch over" and the city could widen State Street. Part of the agreement in the land swap was that at some time in the future, the city would vote whether to formally approve it. And we did.

The city is still in negotiations with the US govt to buy this land. The govt wants too much money and the city is willing to pay too little. If the city doesn't come to an agreement then the govt will sell it to a private entity.

The election proposal last fall was a land swap. The City gave the Feds the land the Feds were leasing and the Feds gave the city the land that the city was leasing. The Reserve Center property is still owned by The United States of America, ie the Federal Government. Does anyone actually read what is on a ballot?

Read what's on a ballot? What for?

Reading might lead to comprehension, and anger, and I'm afraid I will turn into the hulk.
