West Side Power Outage
updated: Feb 13, 2014, 7:41 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

The power was out on Mountain Avenue around 2:45 am on Thursday. What's up?

Edhat subscriber Update:

Called Police non-emergency when I heard it and am very glad to see I wasn't wrong. My power stayed on, just a flicker. Funny that they provide no location that I've yet found. I think it's Westside.

This is why your digital clocks are off:

We saw a huge bright blue flash and the power went out, it surged again the lights went on for a second then another bright blue flash. Was actually kind of scary.

Same thing on Calle del Sol. Awoke to a strange feeling and sound of the power surging (a hum or sorts) on and off. Street lights (or something outside) made it seem like the house was intermittently glowing. Then a flash before it went dark. Everything came back online around 3:00 am that I noticed.

Cheers to the shift workers and night owls. I emailed the SCE text to Ed around 3 a.m. I called PD immediately so they'd have some input; it was pretty identifiable as a transformer boom/explosion, not fireworks or gunshot. Pretty sure I heard two of them.

Ditto what 508 said. Very bright blue whitish flashes could be seen. I'm up on Calle Boca del canon. It was weird. Transformer going I guess.

The Thursday night (2:30am) power outage was the line across from our house and a palm frond that was on it and caught fire. I was up with a crying baby and saw it all happen and called it in. The fire department was there within 6 minutes and then the power company came right after that. The singed palm frond was still laying on the ground as of yesterday.
