Detectives with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Gang Enforcement Unit apprehended a suspect this
morning, February 11, following a foot pursuit in Orcutt near the city of Santa Maria. 28-year-old Nicholas
McCloud of Santa Maria was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, resisting
arrest and grand theft of a bicycle.
McCloud, who has a gang affiliation, was the subject of a gang and narcotics investigation. He was spotted
by a Sheriff's Gang Enforcement Unit Detective walking near his residence in the 3100 block of Courtney
Drive. When Sheriff's Detectives attempted to make contact with him, McCloud took off running and a foot
pursuit ensued. McCloud jumped over fences and through backyards in an attempt to evade authorities
and at one point stole a bicycle from a residence. Joe Nightingale Elementary School was placed on a brief
lockdown while Sheriff's Deputies chased the suspect. About five to ten minutes after the pursuit started,
Sheriff's Detectives apprehended McCloud on the front porch of a residence on the corner of Dickson Drive
and Vineland Drive near the school.
McCloud was found to be in possession of a replica handgun and methamphetamine. He was transported
to a local hospital for medical clearance and then booked at the Santa Barbara County Jail.
Following the arrest, Sheriff's Detectives served a search warrant at McCloud's residence and arrested four
people at the home for being under the influence of drugs. One of the individuals was also arrested for
possession of drug paraphernalia.
