Carpenter/Table Builder
updated: Feb 12, 2014, 9:25 AM

I am looking for someone who can make me a simple, nice wood table in a size I cannot find online, in stores, on craigslist - anywhere! A very small "dining" table for my very small cottage. I don't need a $1000 table by one of the master cabinetmakers, just an attractive, serviceable table. Where do I find someone who can make me one?

Mark Orlando has beautiful wood tables at reasonable prices. He's located on Garden Street, in the warehouse building where Pacific Paper/Empire is located.

Steve Dinka in Carp. He will do smaller jobs and does great custom carpentry work.

You can have a handyman make you a temporary, no/low quality table made out of plywood and 4x4s for around $300ish. If you would like a hardwood table with minimal workmanship, you will be paying close to $1,500 for a small (4' x 4') dining table. I worked for 17 years at furniture maker some years ago, and even then $1,000 would get you a basic table (but it would last forever!).

Not true 202... you just have to find the right person. Which is what they are trying to do. If I could make 300 a pop making cheapo plywood and 4x4 tables, I would be.

If $1000 is at the high end for you it might be prudent to check out places online like Cost Plus/ World Market or even JCPenny's which has a decent furniture collection (currently up to 40% off).

As 4202 mentioned above $1000 barely gets you in the door for a custom made piece that then has to be finished as well adding to the cost.... and that's not even counting chairs.

Over the years, John Bock, a fine craftsman with wood,
has made some beautiful pieces for us. You choose the wood and style. Highly recommended; if he has time for your project, you're lucky. 805 698-9620

A Custom wood table really isn't going to be super cheap even from a handyman. You would be better off hacking something store bought down to size. A handyman could do this for you.
ie - buy a table you like the legs of and have someone make you a top - home depot has large plank pine really cheap
paint the legs stain the top.

I'm a furnituremaker in Carpinteria. I have several tables on hand or would be glad to make you a custom piece. What are the dimensions you desire?

Go to Sobobo wood company on Anacapa near the beach. Select your wood and he can fab it to suit you.

Look in antique and/or thrift stores for a drop leaf table. Mine has two leafs and folds down to about 2 ft. by 3 ft.

I second Adrian Arango
He hand built my entire kitchen
Came-out beautiful!
Cabinet/furniture makers are going to be expensive. You're going to be hard pressed to find anyone under $800 to do this job. Maybe try a finish carpenter to do it as a side jibe like Cordero Carpentery

A drop leaf table is the way to go. Check World Market downtown (online too).

I agree with both points. I had someone make me a mattress platform, cheap and to spec.

It wasn't Mark Orlando, but I know of him and I too would recommend him. But you might just go for a handyman. Throw a tablecloth over a plywood table. That's kind of my non-style.

Make sure you always get the price "in writing". I had a cabinet maker recommended by my neighbor who made me a very simple medium sized "unpainted" cabinet for my bathroom. . He said it would cost $700.00 which I thought was ridiculously expensive for an unfinished piece but i agreed to it. He brought me a bill for $1,450.00 detailing his "extra" work ! I refused to pay more than the original estimate.

Try Room and Board on line. They have small scale furniture and I've visited their showrooms - they have top quality furniture, all made in America.

I too am a carpenter in Santa Barbara specializing in furniture. I am currently trying to build my portfolio. I work mainly in wood and steel furniture using reclaimed, re-purposed, local, or FSC materials but can really work with your vision. I pride myself in making high end for low cost. I really can't give you a quote without hearing exactly what you had in mind but I would love to hear your ideas. My name is Jamie Birkett my cell is 650-703-6574

I hsve a friend who has an oak drop-leaf small table with 4 chairs is going to put on Craigs List for $350 I think. Good shape, real bargain, why not have a quality piece at that price. Check Craig's List on weekend.
