Manuscript Typist
updated: Feb 10, 2014, 8:58 AM

I'm looking for a referral:

An elderly friend is looking for a "reputable business" she could take 70 handwritten pages of manuscript to to have them typed up this week--any suggestions?

Thanks!

Are they legible and will they require a great deal of editing for spelling or punctuation?

These questions bring to bear upon time/cost.

I agree with 576 and would add also a query about the quality of the handwriting. If it is just typing from neat handwriting, with no editorial or copy editing wanted, then she could run an ad in Craigslist --- and screen for "reputability".

It's always helpful to google and this is what I found for typing services: link . Probably easier than Craigslist to call one of these businesses. No doubt there are more.

I'd suggest contacting Westmont College, UCSB and SBCC -- their student bodies are good sources for folks who'd be able to type up materials at a reasonable cost.

Another idea is to have the elderly friend read her manuscript into a cassette recorder and have that transcribed. Or, does she have access to a computer or smart phone? Dragon Dictation is pretty good at turning spoken word file into copy. She could record her reading and put the audio file through Dragon Dictation, for example.

I am an English PhD student at UCSB with excellent typing skills. I am available to type your friend's manuscript. If you're interested, please let me know how to be in touch with you. Thanks.

What is the normal, going rate for typing manuscripts? If it's per hour, what is the assumed hourly typing rate?

Might be an interesting thing to do on the side sometimes...

(1) Copyright Printing & Business Services in Old Town Goleta will do this. http://copyrightsb.com/Office-Business-Services.aspx
We've used them for mailing and printing services, and they are lovely folks who understand customer service and are fairly priced.

(2) You could hire an eager college student instead. Most can type, and will type it into a computer, and then print it from there (so they can spell check, edit, etc.) Back when I used to do this (25 years ago), my typing speed was probably 50-70 words per minute, depending on how technical the material was (and how readable the handwriting was). I charged per hour, rather than per page. I would guess that a college student would be willing to do this for ~$20/hour.

I would think per page would make more sense.
