Karan is a Kurdish war hero who returns home after the war; Sadam Hussein is no longer in power. However, upon his return, he finds his mother intent on finding him a bride. So he flees back into public service and is sent to work as the Regional Commander (basically, the Sheriff) of a remote village in the mountain borderland between Iraq and Turkey. Here he meets Govend, the village teacher, who is trying to follow her heart and help the children, even though the local ancestral war-lord Aziz-Aga and his henchmen don't want her there.

The term "spaghetti western" has been used to describe this film. And certainly there is much in the way of drama with many over the top shots and situations. But it also deals with serious issues facing the region and the Kurdish people.

The film is gorgeously shot, and the scenery is breathtaking. The musical score is also brilliant, highlighting the music of a "Shu-Khur" (hang drum). Definitely one of my favorite movies of the festival. -SF
