Scanner Reports 2-7-14
updated: Feb 07, 2014, 7:00 AM

By Roger the Scanner Guy

It's FRYday February the 7th! I hope everyone's got their rent paid. First thing I do is get that rent paid. Heard someone getting evicted the other day; it's a real bummer. Some of the calls I hear over the Scanner. I find myself praying for a lot of people when I listen to some of the calls I hear. Sometimes I cry too. I was homeless as a kid, houseless as an adult a couple times. Someone reminded me of the terror of being homeless the other day as they were giving me scrap for referring to some criminals as Domestic Terrorists. They thought I was talking about homeless people actually I was writing about Criminals.

I never made much money in my life, or had much money, and have never been able to save money; therefore I haven't had much in my life. I know what it's like to have nothing and having to find a place to live but not being able to pay the "Move in" fees deposits etc. I think it's one of the big reasons for homelessness here. It's really easy to give up and start drinking or using drugs because one may not have enough money to move in to a place and then the FEAR of living outside with no real protection. Some people get attacked in their sleep by others, women get raped, people get robbed, some people are murdered. I don't know why the homeless woman in Oxnard pointed the gun at police but it sounds like she had no hope and she wanted to die. I saw the report on KEYT Thursday morning. Life can be very sad for some people. I was very lucky the last time I ended up with no place to go I was still able to work a little and found work here and there detailing vehicles, a little building maintenance. I had good friends too. I was seeing a counselor at the time and she told me that she thought that when I found another place I'd hang on to it for dear life; she was right. I have been here 16 years; that's the longest I've lived anywhere. I have a great landlord with a heart of Gold; of course she does require the rent. My neighbors are like my Family. Sometimes they piss me off and sometimes I piss them off. We're like Brothers and Sisters.

Whenever I have been without a roof over my head I have found others to camp out with. I think one of the closest calls I ever came to losing my life at another's hand occurred here. I was camping out on City College Hill overlooking the Marina with two other guys, Jack and Darrell. Jack carried a butcher knife in the back of his backpack in the frame. I had a lot of money on me and they knew it; 500.00 cash. In 1980 that was a lot of money. I was trying to get enough together to rent a room somewhere. We had a few beers then went up to our camp. I totally conked out. I don't know why, perhaps it was the mist falling on my face that woke me up a few moments later, but Jack and Darrell had their backs to me and Jack was holding his knife. Darrell said "Do you think he's asleep?" Jack said something like "Not gonna matter when I stick him..." I didn't give it another second I rolled right off the edge of that hill and fell, smooshing my ribs on a rock half way down. I stumbled the rest of the way, landing on my feet and hobbled the Holy Hell outta there! I spent the rest of the night in Sambos drinking coffee. I never saw either of those guys again.

It wasn't too long after that I moved into Newhouse for Alcoholism. I was only 22 at the time and the youngest man there. Others doubted I was ready to stay SOBER the rest of my life but Newhouse and A.A. Not only saved my life but changed my perspective of Life. At that time in my life Newhouse was the perfect place for me to be as I lived there with about 30 other man mostly older, mostly fatherly types. Older Alcoholic men dumped by their families and they all saved my young ignorant ars. I lived in Newhouse a long time. Elmo Little, the man that started Newhouse back in 1955 at 509 Chapala Street put no limits on the length of time a man could stay. All together the 3 times I lived in Newhouse almost 6 years. I think had it not been for Newhouse and Alcoholics Anonymous I would have spent much more time in prison. Although I no longer go to AA, I still have many friends that do go. Treasured Friends that last a Lifetime. The older I get the more grateful I feel for the people I have met in my life, besides Jack and Darrell. I am very grateful for the roof over my head, and the little I have. I know the terror of living on the streets, digging out of the trash for a meal, having nothing, no one to talk to. I hope I never end up houseless again, but if I do I think my Niece's future Husband would be there with me. Domestic Terrorists are Criminals, not Homeless people. Homeless people are in need of a home.

  • 101 Northbound North of the Gaviota Tunnel non-injury accident involving a tractor trailer blocking two lanes.
  • Not sure of the street here but that might be a good thing, it might be good I don't know exactly where this is. It sounded like 1300 Block of Alta Vista 415 Neighbors she's over there banging on his door the last time they got into it he threatened to shoot her cat. That's just cold blooded to hurt a little cat. I heard one of those the other day. I grew up with a guy who hated cats and he killed them he shot a cop when he was 16 he was kinda crazy. I don't know where he's at now either prison or dead that's usually what happens to people like that.
  • Illegal Campers alongside the 101 Northbound Carrillo off ramp 4 or 5 of em males and females in the bushes. I slept at 101 and State Street 34 years ago. Kinda scary sleeping alongside the road like that. You never know when a car's going drive off the road and run right over you. It's a miracle it don't happen around here with all the people camping out there.

Will that's it outta me for now Have a Great Weekend and Dog Willing we will see you on Monday. Later, Roger
