Avelina Wine Closing
updated: Feb 06, 2014, 11:20 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

Avelina wine tasting room in the funk zone is closing down. It's only been 3 months since they opened. What's up?

The space ended up not being adequate for their needs as a tasting room and production facility. They are moving to a different place in Buellton I believe. There was an article in the Independent or NP a couple of weeks ago.

Too many hawaiian-shirt/blouse cruise ship tourists pounding a flight of wine and bolting?

Too many wineries in the "funk" zone. It's getting to be just as bad in downtown Los Olivos and it's loosing it's "charm", just as the zone is loosing it's "funk"

Too many Disneylands don't make it a better place.

Not only are there a ton of tasting rooms in the Funk Zone now, but Avelina was basically an empty warehouse with a bar on the far side. Not the kind of place where I want to taste wines.

The Funk Zone is not at all like Disneyland. Very smart development is keeping it funky and interesting. Glad to see how it's evolving.

I am older than you 575, for me it was denim jackets 1st, now its Hawaiian shirts, seems like I have not seen anyone I liked in a Hawaiian shirt for ever... well except one that's been bringing me a drink or pu-pu's.

Usually I can't stand MISTA but she is right on this one. Completely right.... "funk zone" is super lame now. Just like my T-shirt says, "Everything you like, I liked 10 years ago."

Drunk zone! Well here is a little insight...bottom line small fish owner/ winemaker goes into business with a big shark...big shark eats little shark and spits little fish out. There is a saying "there is a reason why people are rich, its not because they are nice and loyal". Also I heard investor of Avelina was the owner of the entire building and sold with in 2 months for millions which raised everyone's rent tremulously...so sad I really thought Avelina was going to be one of the thriving wineries down there and they probably would have if the investor didn't pull out and screw everything up. Now latest rumor is avelina's investor is going to invest in the lark owners taking over Avelinas area and trying possibly for a sports bar....Although good idea for space not sure how the funk zone business owners will feel about that....it will be interesting to see what happens or to see if they can even get it approved.....

The Funk Zone jumped the shark last year. Good idea gone bad with lease rates that are too high. My rent increased 25% last year when the building was sold, and now is going up another 20% next month because the building transferred ownership again.

I was offered the option of signing a long term lease and lock in that above market rate - but why do that when there's two vacant units that they can't rent at the same new rate. I can simply pack up and move to upper State Street for a lease that's 40% less than what I pay to be in the Fail Zone.

I stopped in there once. That was enough. Not very well made wines, and I believe they were made with non-local fruit at some bottling plant up north.

One small tsunami and the Funk Zone will be history.

When the city gave it an official name, that was the beginning of the end. Set taser to transmogrify, use liberally, see landowners holding increase dramatically in value, while their tenants businesses fail. They aren't making more o' Santa Barbara, but there will always be a business wanting to be here no matter the price.

To put the funk back, establish a vagrant watering hole next to The tittie bar and porn stall rental place. The funk will be restored in no time.

Things change.

In my humble opinion since launching Kahn Wines out their garage in the mid '90s, Christian Garvin has been a catalyst of change to the SB wine scene (owner of Avelina wine).

Regardless of the circumstances of the deal between Brian Kelly and Garvin, edhatters should wish Garvin the best in his next venture! Because without Garvin – the funk zone would not be what it is today!

when the artists move out, it's over. Guadalupe may be the next funk zone.

I agree with 861, Christian Garvin is a great guy, innovative, fun and willing to try new things and involve the community. I was a big fan of his movie nights down at Oreana a couple of years back. I hope the Funk Zone can retain its charm, it's not all gone, but greedy rich landlords are really ruining SB. So tired of it. The middle class American cannot make it here. You gotta be rich. Speaking of the Funk Zone, when is that little pub next to the Ducati shop going to open? Can't wait for that one!
