Taco Bell's Chilito
updated: Feb 04, 2014, 9:10 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

Does anyone know which greater Santa Barbara area Taco Bells are confirmed to be selling the recently reintroduced Chili Cheese Burrito aka Chilito? The Carp location refuses to sell you one because they don't have a button for it on the register even though they have all the ingredients to make it. Hopefully one of the other location in our area is offering this legendary fast food offering. Thanks!

I worked there in the sixties. Everything on the menu was 19 cents. Tacos, Bell Burgers, Bean or Beef Burittos and Tostitos. Drinks 19 cents, too. Simple times.

Not trying to be mean or anything, but I haven't been able to eat any fast food since I saw those pictures of 'Pink Slime' on the web a few years ago.

When I was a kid and Taco Bell used real hamburger, it was actually pretty decent food... but that mystery meat they use now? I'd rather starve, it's better for your health.

My first Taco Bell was in Tampa. A taco cost the same as a gallon of gas :27 cents.

Has anyone ever tried horse meat? The French love it. I found a deli here in town that has it in ground form and it truly makes the best burritos and fajitas that I have ever had. Very low fat, lean & tasty. I think superior to beef and especially better than the dog meat that we had with out our consent in Mexico one year.. stringy and not that good.

When I lived in Germany we were sometimes sold horsemeat that was labeled beef - it was easy to tell the difference because horse foams when you fry it in a pan and it has a naturally sweet taste.

I tried, but was never able to swallow even one bite - I've loved horses since I was a toddler and just couldn't eat one.

Maybe you should be discerning and figure out where "pink slime" is actually used rather than assuming it's in everything, 039P..

And why would any discerning person assume that there is such a thing as fast food that doesn't contain pink slime?

McDonald's even uses it to make Chicken McNuggets for Pete's sake. And even if there isn't any slime, fast food is so loaded with GMOs and chemicals, none of it's really good for you.

Seriously, this war on GMOs is, like many things, baseless with no credible scientific fact. Just a bunch of feel good nonsense.

They don't use it to make chicken nuggets though. Unless you believe they have factories that exist solely for the purpose of fooling people into believing they don't use "pink slime", in which case I don't really know what to tell you.

And before you say, "Yes they do!!", they've done walkthroughs of their processing plants and posted the video in the public realm. Don't know how much more definitive you can get than that.

You keep living in your fantasy world. I, meanwhile, will continue to be a rational human and do research before coming to unfortunate conclusions about things.

I thought the so called war on GMOs was a bunch of hippie nonsense too - I mean food is food, right? Until you realize 2 things:

1) BT corn, soy and other GMO crops have BT toxin in EVERY cell of the plant - even the part you eat, and it doesn't wash off. Eating a toxin that kills insects by rupturing their guts just doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

2) Monsanto specifically got into the business of genetically modifying food crops so they could sell more Roundup herbicide - at least 90% of the corn and soy and a lot of other crops you eat are drenched in a systemic weed killer that does NOT wash off. Eating food drenched in weed killer that is known to cause cancer in the parts per million range doesn't seem like a good idea to me either.

If you Google 'pink slime' the very first image you see looks like strawberry ice cream but it is actually "mechanically separated" chicken - that is exactly what they use to make Chicken McNuggets at McDonalds.

And why does anyone assume I'm a liberal just because I'm concerned about the food I eat? I don't buy into the global warming scam, so I think that pretty much disqualifies me from being a liberal.

COMMENT 492084 agree helpful negative off topic

Mechanically separated chicken doesn't look like the famous "pink slime" image though. It's a lot less smooth, more textured and closer to white in color. That's why a Google image search isn't research.

The location on north Turnpike near Calle Reale had a sign advertising them the other day. I'll try one the next time I am in.

I can't believe the direction this thread has gone. Simple question of where can I get a Chilito becomes a debate on how to eat. I am a grown up and will make my own dietary decisions, thank you for concern.

Ooh, now we're playing gotcha over the picture? Whether or not that picture is correct, Chicken McNuggets are made with ingredients that most people would not consider wholesome.

Anything else? Would you like to know about the commercial defoaming agent in McNuggets? I never thought I'd see anyone seriously argue in favor of this "food" on edhat. All I can say is, YUK!

Years ago I noted the price of meat in the windows of the shops near the Follies Bergere. The price of the horsemeat was significantly more than the price of beef on sale elsewhere in Paris. Thus I never believe any of the stories of people unknowingly being served horsemeat in France. Why would they sell expensive horse disguised as cheaper cow?

As ever, if you don't like it, don't eat it. No need to bag on the Bell - it serves it's purpose - there are certain things you just gotta have every once in a while - pintos and cheese, hard shell tacos (with no gross lettuce) and those strawberry frozen drink thingies. No shade.

134: Pretty damn funny.

We used to eat at Taco Bell on Milpas, when I was a sprout. However, I then learned to listen and read and know that fast food is not at all healthy for us.

GMO foods are scary as hell. I do all I can to avoid ingesting anything corn or soy that's not organic. Trader Joe's insists that none of their not-labeled-as-organic foods contain GMO, but I am not completely convinced of that.

If you eat GMO foods, you are supporting the use of pesticides and thus supporting the mass murder of bees and butterflies and who knows what other beings, not just risking cancer for yourself. Be smart and read labels, buy organic and stay healthy.

It just seemed like a friendly conversation about food in general - if anyone is satisfied with the quality of TB they're welcome to eat it. I certainly used to enjoy it before I realized exactly what I was eating.

The Enchirito can still be had, I believe - just ask for it. I used to get it all the time, even though it wasn't listed on the menu board.
