Midnight Shake
updated: Jan 28, 2014, 8:03 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

12:58 am felt and heard a small sudden shake. No earthquakes showing up. Anyone else hear/feel it? My husband thinks it was a sonic boom.

At that time there was an enormous fire ( up into sky probably 100 ft - near La Colina Junior High) I could see from our deck over on El Sueno. It was several minutes before engines responded coming up 54, and it had died down. Cannot find any news of it on local news, or here. Does anyone know something about it, or is it connected to that shake?

2.3 off coastal Isla Vista, thankyou 883 for posting the link and hopefully those people who react to our shakes will be able to use it to keep up to date on the latest earthquake info.

Spouse slept through it. I laid awake wondering if a bigger one was going to follow... (western edge of Goleta, so right on top of it...)

If heard a rumble and things shook slightly for a couple of seconds. Thought it was just a big truck passing by.

Quakes don't scare me as much as learning that a fire was blazing and I knew nothing, smelled no smoke. Gah.

Didn't feel the quake and I was awake. (micro poetry---I like the microquake'd comment)

Was there another small quake about ten minutes ago? I heard something like a boom in the distance, and my dog freaked. She's been shaking ever since and jumped on my lap. Her ears are back and she won't settle down.

I felt it pretty well out here in Winchester Canyon. I was up late working in the garage and the first I heard sounded like a distant thud and then a couple seconds later the whole garage rumbled and shook deeply for maybe one second. It was enough to send me scrambling into the house to wake up my poor, sound-asleep wife!

Quakes always freak me out, no matter how small. You never know at that moment if it's going to stop without incident or just keep getting worse until it brings down your house or worse....

Good idea to always be prepared and have a family emergency plan!

It's difficult not to freak out with the rumble and shake of an earthquake. From all my past experience (50 years in Cali) on the the top of my recommends list is doing my best to keep at least 1/3 of a tank of gas in our car (I consider it on empty past that point) and as much $5, $10 and $20 bills as you're able to feel good with. In the Loma Prieta quake as well as Northridge ATM's weren't operating and the gas stations had to make sure their pipes and connections were good - so no gas. The "big one" will happen, it's just a matter of when. I don't want to be out of gas or cash when it does. (of course there's storing water, food and safety kits but cash and gas are easy).
