A light dusting on the Mesa. So light you could not see raindrops in the air, just as they hit dry sidewalks.

Looks like rain is coming in the next week. Hopefully it will slow down and sit on the central coast. A good drenching please.

365 - Silver iodide is an expensive crap shoot. Occasionally, suitable clouds when seeded, drop rain. Sometimes, they don't. And the altostratus clouds currently covering in this area are in the midlevel of the atmosphere, over 10,000 feet up, and a considerable proportion of any precipitation is likely evaporating out before it reaches the ground anyway.

We live in a Mediterranean type climate, which makes us susceptible to extended drought... and we should not live beyond our (water) means. Rain will arrive when the atmospheric conditions permit. Forget silver iodide or other chemical cloud seeding. As if the Earth's atmosphere isn't polluted enough already.....

The ground appears damp, but no rain has come from the sky... (Winchester Canyon). Stealth rain apparently. I'm hoping for a full frontal attack. Bring it on!

an amusing quote from the "toxicity" document on the county website...feeling bad for all those "lower" organisms...
"Why is there concern about using silver iodide in cloud seeding? It is well established that silver in some forms can be toxic to lower organisms without being toxic to higher animals (Kotrba 1968). Numerous controlled laboratory studies have shown that silver, silver nitrate and even silver iodide when added to laboratory aquariums, even at trace levels, can be toxic to some fish and other aquatic life when exposed over long time periods; the toxicity is related to specific compounds, concentrations and other factors such as water hardness, etc (e.g., Davies & Goettl 1978).

If you read the documents on the county website, you'll find that all the research on cloud seeding that is used to support the information is almost entirely more than 30 years old. If you read the part where they mention potential toxicity to humans, the information is carefully worded around the idea that the information is not available (because there hasn't been more research conducted). We need some smart young scientists to do some investigating- too bad it's not as easy to get funding from the Naval Weapons Center at China Lake when you want to know if what is already happening is bad for people and plants and animals....

Guess the lake will continue its march towards 30% capacity.

Btw, when will it be illegal to water lawns in S.B. & Montecito? Guess the threat of cutbacks & conserve on your own will soon fall by the wayside.

Dry 154@Foothill. Looks like SLO and Ventura might get some rain when this radar map is animated. Radar shows what's up in the sky angled up away from the transmitter, so farther from the + inside a circle mark what's shown is higher. To get measurable rain on the ground usually requires a fairly large and solid area, otherwise most of it evaporates before hitting the ground. You can often get a somewhat better idea of the rain potential from this regional map because it combines returns from multiple transmitters and thus shows more of what's going on nearer the ground. On the regional map it looks like Santa Maria area may have scored a few short small squalls.

Thanks for both those graphics. Extremely sobering. CA better use its water wisely when it has rains, because no one can predict whether another 200 year drought could happen. If it does, then CA is toast as far as human habitation is concerned.
