Scanner Reports 1-24-14
updated: Jan 24, 2014, 7:00 AM

By Roger the Scanner Guy

Thank Dog it's FRYday. Watching Channel 9 Snooze the other night there was a story where a girl was telling everyone it ain't worth it to Drink and Drive because you never know what is going to happen. She lost her big sister because they went out with friends who were drinking and driving. Two girls were killed in the wreck. It really should not be called an accident. What is accidental about drinking and driving, or driving under the influence for that matter? Every time someone is killed driving under the influence of Alcohol or Drugs, the driver or friends of the drivers usually say they should not have done it. It's the same thing over and over and over again but no one GETS IT! It happens again and again. Driving under the influence has become part of our lives. Many people do it at least once in their lives. I did it when I was younger; I'm glad I don't do it anymore. I know people that do though. I don't see them or I'd call the police anonymously. That is the way to report someone if you're thinking of turning someone in. Do it anonymously so they don't know you turned them in. They would be wondering who snitched them out and it might stop them from doing it again, thinking that everyone's out to get em. Keep em paranoid.

Whenever I write about Driving under the influence, I hear stories from people who admit barely escaping Check Points realizing that they were approaching one only to pull a U-Turn within a couple blocks to escape being checked out, "Of course I only had one beer." they add. So why avoid the Check Point? One fella that says that to me usually means he had a dozen beers, by one beer he means he had one 12-Pack. I think Driving under the influence will exist as long as there is travel. Someday when we have Flying cars people will be flying into buildings and into the ocean, into each other of course. The only hope there is in curbing this crime are tougher Laws and Punishments, longer jail and prison sentences. On Edhat commenters have suggested that not only names of offenders be printed but Mug Shots of people arrested for driving under the influence be published this might help. Someone's name being printed they could get away with saying "Oh that is someone else with the same name as mine." They might have less of a chance with that excuse if their mug shot was printed. Offenders might think twice about driving under the influence if their employer, or maybe their clients see that they have been arrested for driving a motor vehicle impaired not many people out there want to do business with a criminal.

I remember years ago my name being printed in the paper for breaking the law. A few years after my name was in the paper I was applying for a job somewhere and the potential employer recognized my name and he says to me "Get your butt on down the road I don't hire criminals." Needless to say I got my butt on down the road. Back then I was young and really did not have a problem finding work I had a problem keeping it, and one of the reasons I had a problem keeping a job was because I preferred getting drunk, and I usually got into trouble when I got drunk. My name was printed in the paper for a Burglary which was dropped down to a petty theft because all I took was a street map of Santa Barbara County which at the time cost 50 Cents, stupid huh? This was 34 years ago and when I went to court I fell asleep in Judge Lodge's court room snoring away they had to wake me up. I didn't get into too much trouble after this in my life, though I'm not a lifelong 12-Step member. A.A. Showed me many things and I credit the Steps for saving my life as well as others' and it's the reason I did not stay a stupid criminal for very long. I still practice the Twelve Steps of A.A. having been planted in my brain almost every day for 17 years. I know people are sick and tired of my obsession with Driving under the Influence. Will I'm sick and tired of hearing about people losing their lives. Driving under the influence; when that ends I'll write about something else.
