Montecito Pot Bust?
updated: Jan 23, 2014, 8:30 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

Two helicopters landed in Montecito yesterday near East Valley and Ladera. I saw a half-dozen policemen disembark and walk into the brush. It was the same spot where a bunch of pot plants were confiscated last year. Does anyone know what was going on yesterday? Thanks.

Joint training exercise for Montecito, Santa Barbara, Summerland fire departments.

hehe "joint" training

Whatever else the police were doing, they proved once again that the Sheriff is determined to waste as much county tax money as possible - it would never occur to him to send deputies to look for a pot grow in patrol cars when they could reach the location in TWO helicopters.

Marijuana isnt even planted for another couple of months.

Do people not realize that its a plant, a weed? It grows naturally in most places and it, like every other weed has a season...

This is just the cops playing warrior so they can justify their multi million dollar toys and "war" on _____.

--- Marijuana can only be distributed after it has been grown and harvested. Once that is done, bales can be stored until they are sold. I have no idea why the planting season has anything to do with when harvested crops are sold.

--- Of course people realize that it is a plant (a weed is also a plant.) As for season, see first comment.

--- You do not have an iota of evidence to support your claim. Just guessing.

I can tell you for sure that Montecito youth have been growing pot there for over 40 years.

Despite my use of the word "joint", it had nothing to do with pot. This was about fire preparedness. Given our dry conditions, I'm happy to have firefighters who know what they are doing.

That's the area where Charles Lindbergh landed on Mrs. Knight's estate for a visit; she funded most of his trans-Atlantic flight. Mrs. Knight's butler stood out holding up a dishtowel for a wind sock. Cops training shouldn't be a reason for unpleasant remarks.

The OP says a half dozen policemen went into the bushes, so since when do "firemen who know what they're doing" dress up like the police?

Oh sorry about that..OP Saw joint exercise..

Since he OP doesn't mention seeing firemen at all, what makes anyone think this has ANYTHING to do with the Fire department?

SBCARDINAL agree helpful negative off topic

2014-01-23 11:25 AM

I'm not the OP, but I can definitively say that helicopters landed for a fire department exercise in that area yesterday afternoon. Flicka, it's adjacent to Mrs.Knight's property, but unless the lines moved over the years, was not on her property yesterday.

Okay fine, I was going by what the OP saw. Now that that's settled, does anyone know what sort of training scenario might involve the police and firefighters flying around in helicopters and going on excursions into the bush?

I mean, my understanding is that the FD typically uses helicopters to drop water on fires, and the cops play Rambo.

They were practicing setting up a helibase for fire season.

I'm still not understanding why FD training would involve the police (if they were involved) - not trying to be difficult, I just think a lot of things the Sheriff does with helicopters is a big waste of money.

The report stimulates even more questions. How many aircraft does local law enforcement operate? If a half dozen policemen disembarked, these are big helicopters, designed for more than observation. Do we still need a national guard?

SBCARDINAL agree helpful negative off topic

2014-01-23 11:51 AM

My guess is that the similarity between fire & police uniforms led OP to think it was police, but that's just a guess. And if OP saw something in the exact same place the pot bust was, then we're talking about different things. The pot bust was higher up on the hill than where the helibase exercise was yesterday.

SBCARDINAL, I didn't say it was on Mrs. Knight's property, I said hers was in that area; "adjacent" would fit description of "area". Was I somehow offensive?

Isn't the National Guard in Afganastan? I mean they are suppose to guard the US But I have heard of National Guard troops going to the Gulf War and Iraq, I assume they are in Afganastan now.

The county has 5 helicopters and 1 airplane, which is about 3 more aircraft than we actually need as far as I'm concerned.

I'm pretty sure that most cities or counties with a population of less than 500,000 don't have more than 2 or 3 aircraft, and considering some of the silly things ours are used for, I just don't think we need to be paying to operate and maintain as many as we do.

Those cities and counties aren't located at the edge of the SoCal Megalopolis (Greater LA = 17.5 million people).

The day they all decide to flee North for whatever reason (earthquake, biochem panic, etc) will be epic around here.

And when the catastrophe happens, exactly what benefit will we get from 5 helicopters and a small airplane, that we wouldn't get from 2 or 3 helos and no plane?

OY. Seriously, folks. So many complaints in a steady, predictable stream every single time police, fire, rescue etc etc etc is mentioned. WHAT GIVES, SB. When you're stuck injured or in a catastrophe, may you remember the day you criticized these people for being well-trained and well-equipped.

Man, this is getting old.

COMMENT 488782P agree helpful negative off topic

2014-01-23 09:13 PM

No, what's getting old is the idea that no expense can be denied to the county air force - people did just fine before helicopters were invented, but now that we have them, there's no money for anything else. Our roads and bridges are crumbling and our libraries are only open a few hours a week.

All so that a bunch of adrenalin junkies can use up most of the flight time playing Rambo fighting the war on drugs - that's the Sheriffs priority not ours, and just speaking for myself, I'm tired of it.

I'm wondering if those who are complaining about firefighter training exercises have ever had their homes threatened by a fire. Those firefighters are our true heroes, not some movie actor or singer.
