Who serves the best Coctel de Camarones in Santa Barbara? Plenty of plump shrimp, avocado and a generous amount of saltines on the side please.

Shrimp Cocktail and Coctel de Camarones are two very different things. I like the one at Reyes Market in Carp although it can be hit or semi-miss depending on who is making it and the shrimp they have.

Cesar's - there is no question about it. Not sure about anything else on the menu.

What is the difference between them? Pretty sure they are the same damn thing!

I'd think a Coctel de Camarones is a mexican style shrimp cocktail (hence the avocado) while a shrimp cocktail is gringo style (with cocktail sauce).

If you don't know the difference between shrimp cocktail and coctel de cameron, go to Cesar's and order the latter. They are quite different. The American version features boiled shrimp, peeled and chilled, with a red cocktail sauce and lemon. In many locations, it would be considered gauche to eat it with saltines. The Mexican version is a tomato-based chilled soup, with shrimp, peppers, onions, etc. in it. Fresh-squeezed lime and tostadas are the accoutrements, but some cooks serve it with saltines. It's spicy, zesty, and utterly unlike the American shrimp cocktail, other than they both feature chilled shrimp.

A little bit north of SB, try La Michoacana Restaurant at 1009 North A Street in Lompoc. Excellent coctel with avocado, shrimp and octopus.

Palapa's C. de C don't taste like a shrimp cocktail to me.
They do have a reputation for them, but guess I prefer the traditional shrimp cocktail.

Boca de Rio on Milpas offers several seafood cocteles. The now-closed Altamirano's had great shrimp and seafood cocteles served in a schooner. Shrimp and oysters - yum. Maybe the remaining one in old town Goleta has the same.

Since shrimp have such a delicate flavour, I am at a loss to understand why spicy and zesty seem to be the best garnishes! My favourite Shrimp cocktail would include at least 1/2 dozen hefty shrimp served on a lettuce bed with avocado and some Sauce Mari-rose on the side. And if available, some crusty sour dough rolls too!

For Cocteles de camaron In Santa Barbara, "Cesar's Place" and/or Boca Del Rio both on Milpas St.  accompanied with oysters on the half shell. I have tried it with a michelada but its a little overwhelming because both Coctel and Michelada have Clamato juice.. Best COCTEL DE CAMARON in the 805 "El Jarocho" on Ventura Ave A MUST TRY IF YOU LOVE COCTEL!

if you make it down to carp, try delgado's or sly's for their coctel de camarones. el taco grande also has one but I tried it the other day and was unimpressed.
