We had a very good experience with the designers and installers from Home Depot. Completely redid our kitchen down to the studs. Love it.

After doing quite a bit of research re: granite countertops, we decided to go with Paperstone product. It is the most enviro choice and granite, especially in enclosed spaces, gives off radiation----i.e., may cause cancer.

Be careful when purchasing less expensive products. You get what you pay for.

Call Jay at Rubottom in Ventura. They do really clean work and everyone that I have referred to them says they have the best prices. I lucked out a few years ago when my brand new condo came with Rubottom cabinets. They were, to this day, the best kitchen I have ever had.

Stay away from the Kitchen Company--owners are charming until there is a problem. Ours was only fixed because we still owned them some money. Definitely not recommended!

Don't listen to all the wacky hype about radioactive granite. You might slip and fall and crack your head open on a granite counter and die, but no one has ever caught cancer from a granite counter and no one ever will.

We chose a high quality pre-finished cabinet for our kitchen . We couldn't stand the thought of painters hanging out sanding and painting/ varnishing numerous coats after the install. Saved a lot of grief. We used Greg Iler of Centerline and never regretted the decision.

We loved Home Depot. They have every configuration you could think of. Also the styles, hardware are all there to look at and feel. Got everything in perfect condition an on time. They really work with you...for free!!!

how many days were the workmen working in your kitchen?
My kitchen needs to be redone too but the thought of mess for weeks of time are delaying the process.

Go through your cabinets and toss anything you haven't used in a year. Put in a ceiling rack for your pots. Then get a couple antique sideboards. Fit your sink in one. Classy. After the demo, your'e done.

We used home depot 3 years ago for our cabinets and granite countertops. The countertops are great, the people HD contracts out to do a nice job installing. There was an issue with the cabinets, where the ones we bought were supposed to be on hold and then when we went to pick them up they had already sold half of them. We were on a time crunch so it was very frustrating at the time. But over all the cabinets have held up great, we had a contractor friend install them for us. Oh and so far no cancer from the granite :)

Utt Construction. Award winning. If your going towards high end custom. If not, home depot is adequate. Karen at Chanel City Lumber does a good job on pre-finished as does Amy at Haywards. Neither of those installs though. I have had numerous supply chain issues with H.D..

A total and unreserved second for Mastercraft Kitchens on Haley at Laguna. For anyone who wants to stay LOCAL (that is, not HD), go with Mastercraft.

Shorebird: It is hard to say how long it actually took since my husband did the preparation for the installation of the countertops (granite from Pyramid) and the tile floors were installed by a local contractor (again, stone from Pyramid). Home Depot uses local contractors to do the demolition and installation and the prefinished cabinets were ordered out of North Carolina (via Home Depot). Once they were delivered, they sat in my garage while the demolition was going on. The demolition and installation took a full day, I believe. I travel on business during the week, so hubby was the "sidewalk supervisor." We were remodeling our whole house at the time and at the end I think the only things still here after 34 years of ownership are the original bathtubs! Suffice it to say, we were in construction mode for about six months that year!

One can shield themselves from any radiation from granite countertops (or perhaps escaping from their microwave oven) by simply wearing a high quality tinfoil hat and vest while in the kitchen. I read about this protective shielding technique on ed-hat while reading about exposure to high altitude secret spraying we are all being subjected to daily.

Home Depot "refaced" my kitchen cabinets and that amounted to actually changing all the doors and hardware, and they even moved and re installed oven and microwave. I also had bathrooms done recently and one custom vanity plus granite was like $3,000. I bought stock Home Depot vanity and granite counter top for less than $300 and it looks just as good. (A different bathroom). We redid my mother in law's kitchen down to bare walls with Ikea cabinets and sink, and it looks very very nice.

I went through Anthony at Home Depot he's a great help! Love my cabinets! They had installers, everything I needed!
Counter tops I must admit I went out of town on this, but since I live in Carp it was a split decision, I went with Granite through Surfaces USA!! So many choices all at once I had a hard time choosing they also had a list of installers. I went to plumbing supply for my own sink and faucets etc, hired my own plumber. I didn't do any electrical so I guess I lucked out on that. Then I bought appliances with Home Depot again.

OP here... thanks for the suggestions!

Say, have any of you ever had previously stained/satin finished oak cabinets painted?

Do folks agree that quartz is the most durable and easy to maintain surface?

thanks!

We are getting new cabinets done by Andrews Fine Cabinets and Millworks out of Ventura. Excellent so far-- we just haven't decided on the drawer pulls yet! Ray and his crew have a lot of experience in design, construction, and functional options for cabinets. They have been great with communication and clear on cost from the beginning. Their website has some photos of their projects or you can just call Ray (805)651-9890. We talked to some of their previous customers and all were quite happy with the work.

If you are going to do a total remodel ($25k or more) and need a experienced design help, I suggest SB Kitchens (Ed) did a great job with high quality cabinets & critical design planning you won't get through a "big box".
