Anyone know if there is street sweeping today, Martin Luther King day?

They had indicated last week that there would not be sweeping today.

Trash pickup happened as usual though...

Of course there is! The city employees need to make their overtime pay (holiday rate) and besides the city never stops citing tax paying citizens for innocuous events with over bearing fines.

My old neighbor - a veteran of 3 wars - received a parking ticket on Memorial day just off of State St where he parked to watch the parade. The city of SB ticketed a veteran who fought 3 wars and lost countless friends and fellows, on a federal holiday designed to honor those who died for our freedoms!

That's beyond greed. Its sick.

Street Sweeping has been cancelled today. A press release was posted on edhat last week.

Wait, are you implying that he should be given an exemption from the law due to his status as a vet?

Yikes...

370 - are you sure city employees drive the sweepers?

No 379, I don't think he should receive any special treatment. I do not think the city should be ticketing cars on a Federal holiday. The fact that a veteran received the ticket was just an added insult to the already idiotic revenue generation tactics employed by the city.

Glad they're not sweeping today, or am I? What difference does the street sweeping make anyhow? It seems more of a revenue generation tactic than a good practice.

Does anyone know if the street sweeping sends more oil down the drains and into the ocean than just leaving it to soak in?

I just saw a city SBPD meter maid marking cars in a 90 minute zone on State Street near Islay.

EDHAT ONLINE is correct, no sweeping on MLK Day. The Tenth Amendment reserves holiday creation to the states, so this is voluntary action by the city, and much appreciated.

That won't stop the army of code enforcers from writing all kinds of other tickets...and look out for the water police - coming to your front door soon!

From the police website.....

Parking restrictions (and enforcement) are in effect on ALL Holidays. Restrictions include, but are not limited to, 90 and 75 minute zones, green zones, yellow zones, white zones, red zones, permit required zones and most bike lanes (the only exception are those bike lanes that state "school days" as most schools are not in session on legal Holidays).

For the Street Sweeping schedule and enforcement on Holidays please call the Street Sweeping hotline at 897-1903 as the sweep enforcement schedule varies depending on the particular Holiday.

Where are you? The City of Goleta website routinely has this kind of info.

No holidays for the greedy parking ticket issuers. LAME.
