The Franklin Trail opened to the public in November as the most recent front country trail in the region. It starts from the end of Meadow View Lane in Carpinteria, passing the Carpinteria High School and local greenhouses before heading up into the mountains.
This past Saturday Gerry Ching led a group of 14 people on a Sierra Club hike to the top of the existing trail.

Eventually the trail will go all the way to the top of the mountains, connecting with the Alder Creek Trail, over to Jameson Lake. This will happen when the property easement issues are settled, ideally in the next year or two.
Thanks to the Montecito Trails Foundation for quickly building the existing trail once the first phase of property easements were worked out. The trail is steep in places, but it is well-designed with plenty of switchbacks to prevent erosion and lessen the grade.
The Franklin Trail is a multi-use trail, and dog owners are reminded to keep their dogs on a leash.
