1981 Internet Report

A subscriber recently sent Ed a link to this 1981 news
report about the beginning of the internet.
The news reports starts, "Imagine if you will, sitting down to your morning coffee, turning on your
home computer to read the day's newspaper. Well it's not as far fetched as it may seem." I'm sure
some people spit out their morning coffee just hearing that sentence. News? On the computer? Impossible!
Dubbed "the newest form of electronic journalism" just 33 years ago, it must have been hard to imagine
how far we have come since then.
In 1981 this news report estimated that there were 2,000-3,000 home computer owners in the Bay Area.
For computers being as new as they were in the 80's, that's a pretty high number. Now, most homes have
at least one computer with multiple devices that have computer-like abilities.
"Engineers will now predict the day will come when we get all our newspapers and magazines by home
computer, but thats a few years off." Just 22 years later, edhat.com was born as a unique citizen
