Philly Cheesesteak
updated: Jan 07, 2014, 2:00 PM

Where is the best place in the greater Santa Barbara to get a good ol' Philly Cheesesteak ? McMasters in IV was great, but is now closed and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. Thanks

It's casting the net a bit wide, but I gotta say, the cheesesteak sandwich worth comparing to is the one at the Great Steak and Hoagie Company on Main Street in downtown Ventura. Holy Cow!! The one with mushrooms and marinara is simply to die for. Worth the drive and then some. Order their fries to go along with it -- I only get a half order because the order is so huge. They even have jars of peppers at the window.

Just wonderful!

Sorry, it's on Thompson, not Main:

410 E Thompson Blvd
Ventura, CA 93001

Jersey Mike's out in Camino Real Marketplace does a good job.

Ventura's not "greater Santa Barbara"--it's "shades of LA". I'm just sayin'.

Try The Nugget.

What exactly is on an authentic Philly Cheesesteak? Don't think I have ever had one.

how about a decent slice Philly cheese cake? I've had it at Anderson's , Daily Grind,Whoe foods, Lazy Aces. It's all been meh with odd textures and preservative after taste.

Homemade beats them all but I'm not a baker.

Philly boy here. Born and raised in the land of hoagies and soft pretzels.

As stated here, Jersey Mikes and Norton's are the best around here. Be careful with Norton's though, because if you order it to go they wrap it in tin foil and the bread quickly turns to mush.

Back in the mid to late 90's, there was a hoagie place on Milpas at Batty's batting cage (where Norton's second location is now), and they had the BEST cheesesteaks. Alas....all good things must come to an end.

Another vote for driving to Ventura for Steak & Hoagie. Jersey Mike's doesn't hold a candle to them.

The Deli in La Cumbre Plaza mall - the biggest and best sandwiches for much less than all the other places. Jersey Mike's is ridiculously expensive for what you get

The Plaza Deli at La Cumbre makes good cold subs, but if you are from the Philly area, you will probably prefer Jersey Mike's.

253 - I'm with you. Jersey Mike's is passably good for a fast food franchise, but then I look to the left and see Gina's where I can get a better sandwich (with much better service and some attempt at decent presentation) for a buck or two less or I look to the right and see a lot of nice non-sandwich options (plus Anna's which can put together a wicked sandwich when they're not too busy) and I always avoid JM's unless I am with someone who just has to have it. I was surprised they chose to place themselves between Anna's and Gina's and I'm even more surprised they can stay in business there.

For the illiterate ones, the OP was asking about CHEESESTEAKS in the SANTA BARBARA area. Not subs. Not cheesecake. And most certainly NOT Ventura.

298 - If you get a Jersey Mikes frequent buyer card and go there a lot on double-points Tuesdays, then the average cost of a sandwich is actually LESS than Gina's. And no one has bread that's as good as Jersey Mikes. If you say "Subway", I'll smack you.

Norton's blows Jersey Mike's out of the water for a cheesesteak or any other sando.

Norton's makes great sandwiches, but unfortunately with thin sliced soft bread, and it all falls apart while being eaten.

395 - The "original" cheese steak place in Philly uses cheese whiz. However, as most people from will attest, a Pat's Steak is one of the worst cheese steaks in the city. The ambiance and history are fine but the sandwich is awful.

Jersey Mike's is opening another store downtown at 1213 State, next to McDonald's, in the space formerly occupied by Quizno's.
