Injured Hiker Rescued on Cold Springs Trail
updated: Jan 04, 2014, 7:16 PM

Source: SB County Sheriff's Office

Emergency crews from the Montecito Fire Protection District and the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Search and Rescue team worked together today, January 4, to rescue an injured hiker on Cold Springs Trail in the Montecito area.

Just before 11:00 a.m., a couple in their forties from Santa Barbara was out for a day hike along the East Fork Cold Springs Trail when the male slipped on a rock at the upper creek crossing and suffered an ankle injury. The hiker was in severe pain and unable to walk any further. The couple used a cellular phone to call the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Emergency Dispatch Center and ask for help.

Given the wilderness location, personnel from both the Montecito Fire Protection District and Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Search and Rescue were paged out to respond. Paramedics from Montecito Fire reached the injured hiker and determined that a trail carryout was required. After paramedics treated the injured hiker for pain and shock, Sheriff's Search and Rescue personnel strapped him into a stretcher attached to a wheel which was then used to perform a carryout down the trail to a trailhead on Mountain Drive. The hiker was then transferred to American Medical Response paramedics and transported to a local hospital.
