Rusty's Pizza Closed?

Just tried to go to lunch at Rusty's Pizza on Cabrillo and the doors were closed. Called their phone number and the lady said that location has closed down.

Maybe they're going to fix the bridge that goes underneath the building.

I love Rusty's but I can't afford them.

Given the lack of parking and difficulty getting in and out of that lot, I'm surprised they lasted this long! Being 3+ blocks west of the State Street restaurant glut could be another contributing factor. Guess it's Fairview or Upper State St. For a Rusty's meal.

?!?!?! @ 981 by-golly there is a portion of a bridge under the building ! I checked out the county pages - who knew !

The city will be replacing the bridge on Cabrillo Blvd. over Mission Creek sometime in 2014/15? Part of the bridge project includes obtaining some or most of the property where Rusty's is now, in order to widen the creek. (That's what I've heard.)

COMMENT 482081 agree helpful negative off topic

The Cabrillo Bridge, which is failing and will be replaced in the next couple of years has it's concrete abutment (foundation) tied to the foundation for the lighthouse building. Somehow they were constructed that way. Part of the bridge replacement will involve removing the connected foundation systems.

Regarding Rusty's, I'll never understand how it can be called pizza.

So I started just taking orders from everyone that call me , must of had a lot of people wanting free pizza's because it didn't get there in under 30 min

Pizza Guru is not real pizza. ANd not that good if you know anything about pizza (which anyone whose lived here too long or never lived in NY/NJ does not). Sal's is the best.

Well, I prefer thin crust pizza (I know, I know, whatever) and I happen to think Rusty's does the best of this version.

Taste is highly subjective. For instance, I've had that pizza from Treasure Island and wanted to wash it out of my mouth with water immediately after it went in.

So much more important things to agree on than pizza!

The Rusty's at the beach was originally built by the owner of Rusty's for his wife to be a high end seafood restaurant.

A contractor friend did the 'remodel' and the cost overruns were astronomical because she kept changing her mind.

The front doors alone, beautful as they are, cost near what a luxury car does.

However, SB is much nicer the NJ.

I second the motion for a "Castagnola's Lobster House."

It was a wonderful place in the 70s with its cafeteria-style ordering. Fairly priced lobster, abalone (Mmmm!!) with wine and ice cold beer.

What wasn't to like!?

I don't think the restaurant is "gone". It's reported on KEY3 they are closed for the remodel with the bridge. The bridge will take 2 years. It's a simple business decision. I agree with the comment about the original seafood restaurant, the wife driving up the costs, but in fairness, the owners have always tried to make a quality environment, consistent product and the seafood failed, due to lack of demand. They admitted it, switched back to pizza and it's been a success. They did spend their own cash on the remodel and it's appreciated by the tourists. Thank you Roger Duncan and family. They've done a lot for Santa Barbara.

As 482227 said, Rusty's is moving to the old Be Bop location -- on State Street, not Cabrilllo.

Some love Rusty's, seems most responders here don't, but I agree 125 that they do make a great BBQ chicken with cashews pizza!
