It Shouldn't Have Happened
updated: Jan 04, 2014, 11:00 AM

By Fired Up Fred

This is not a topic that I want to talk about but feel like I must. Talking about sad topics that shouldn't have happened and could have been avoided, are not my favorite. I am very sad about the passing of a young woman, Mallory Rae, and madder than a hornet at Raymond Morua.

This young woman was killed by the 3-time drunken driver, let's call him Ray. You know if he was caught 3 times before, he has driven drunk numerous more times. Ray also embezzled money from K-Mart, who was a prior employer. So we have Ray the embezzler, the drunk driver, and the murderer. He not only hit this girl which killed her, but he stopped to look back and then kept going. Now if he would have stopped and ran back to see if he could help this girl, I would at least think he had a shred of decency. He did not, he did nothing but run away thinking only of himself. Knowing this was a 3rd DUI and he was in big trouble.

So, who is to blame? It seems obvious to me that Ray is to blame, no question. How he tries to get out of this mess will tell a whole other story. Going into rehab and saying he has a drinking problem is not going to cut it. Prison for a long time and to never have a driver's license again seems about right.

My other question about Ray is how did he get hired as a staffer for Lois Capps, a government representative? Do they conduct background checks anymore? He was indeed a staff member representing Lois Capps at the Independent's Holiday Party, where he was drinking and most assuredly drunk when he left. So was he a staffer of Lois Capps during the other 2 DUI's? Has he ever received special treatment because of his employer? Did Lois Capps know he had 2 prior DUI's? If she did, why would she send him to a Holiday Party representing her, where you know there is going to be alcohol? I think she should have known about Ray. It's public record, right? All questions that deserve an answer.

Well, l hope D.A. Dudley throws the book at him and I hope Mallory's family will at least get justice. I understand that there is a legal request that was sent to Washington D.C. to try and resolve the legal claim of the family. I hope that they do the right thing for this family, give them some closure so that they can begin the healing process. This is a sad, sad day for the city of Santa Barbara that has lost one of its young citizens due to a drunk driver. It could have been avoided. It didn't have to happen. It should not have happened.

To the family of Mallory Rae Dies, I am so sorry for the loss and for your life sentence of a lifetime without her.

In sadness remembering Mallory,
